my father-in-law is a pilot and he has played Microsoft Flight Simulator since the earlier releases, but now is always boring me for better graphics to Flight Simulator 2004, I know there is a release named FS Global 2005 but I just can't find it, but even so, I would like to know if there is some Flight Simulator game younger and with a better appearence than the old Microsoft Flight Simulator?

Looks good, but I think he is more into the "comercial flight simulation" I've showed him Heroes of the Pacific, and he just didn't liked it, he doesn't like "games", he is more into the real simulation, I'm looking for something closer to Microsoft Flight Simulator but with better graphics / reality, just a more complete simulator.

For FS2004 there are tons of addons that improve flying experience. Go to http://www.simviation.com/menu.html and see what you need. There is also a terrain mesh that is generated using shuttle radar topography, it's about 8 GB in size, divided in small 14 MB chunks, and I think it's safe to say it's the closest to the real thing. The download is free of any charge : http://www.simviation.com/fsdterrainsrtm.htm . I've downloaded it all, but didn't have any time to try it. It all comes down to what you need : terrain meshes, aircrafts, panels, airports, air traffic control etc....

Ronhrin : I hope you'll find it usefull, but as I've said ,you need to know what you are searching for (I'm not an expert so I can't say "go there, this is all that you need", I'm just a beginner in FS2004).

Seron : seems to me you are looking for arcade games, not sims. For PC there aren't many arcade flying games, to my knowledge there is Heroes of the Pacific (nice game, but seems that you don't like it), Aerial Strike - The Yager Missions, Wings over Vietnam and that's about it.

I find FS2004 the best sim for commercial flying.
There will be a new MSFS around summer 06' though, so you might maybe just as well wait for that... I am looking for some major improvements for the next of it's series. Would be nice to see better physics and better ATC and ground AI

Summer '06 you wont see a new release, cause beta testers have been told beta is set to start august '06, and from past experience beta usually takes minimum 3 months for fs. And since it's a completely build from buttom new dx9 engine build for fs10 it will take a while.

I would recommend X-Plane 8. It's by far the most realistic flying experience you will get on your pc. It's flight model is based on blade element theory, not on physics that are modeled from plane to plane ai FS2004. With X-Plane 8 DVD you will get global scenery, which will let you fly anywhere on earth, landing on any of the 18,000+ airports, without installing any additional packs. The scenery is divided into two packs, generation 8 which covers the continental US, and generation 7 which covers the rest of the world or where the gen 8 is not installed. If you have a decent rig, the scenery can be really excellent. Tons of building in large cities, with real roads. You can fallow the highways in your home city and even find the little street you live on. It's all very accurate since it's pulled right from available road maps. There are many great airplanes, helis, gliders, model airplanes or boats, end even spaceships (yes you can even fly out of the orbit in this game) available free of charge.

I could write a book about this game, but its better if you try it yourself. You can download the demo, and then use a mini-cd to trick it into thinking you got the full version. This will let you try all of the functions of the game in limited area provided in a demo.

some links;
http://www.x-plane.com/ - homepage
http://www.x-plane.org/ - great place for all x-plane goodies
http://www.3pointaircraft.com/ - very cheap scenery upgrade that I use personally.

Most realistic by default maybe, but surtainly not with the numours payware addons that exist for fs2004(fs9). Which are used by many real world airliners to train their pilots for real life situations.
To name a few:

Last time I checked you get world wide scenery with fs2004 aswell, landing on 21,000+ airports without installing additional packs. Which again comes in ten fold times more than it ever has for xplane with much more detail. Again payware.
To name a few:

Again all of that you find in fs2004, and with payware addons you get true satellite terrain mesh, roads, rivers, real time weather.

But your right, by default if your not nutts like me and fly fs2004 with tons of payware addons(fs2004 folder is as big as 57 gig installed) then X-Plane is more realistic. But with payware addons nothing beats fs2004. X-plane simply lack good payware addons.

If you compare default fs2004 with fs2004 loaded with tons of addons you wouldnt recognize it. Looks stunning and as true to life as it gets(while still being a sim ofcourse)

P.S

For all your freeware goodness check out "File Library" at http://avsim.com/ which is the biggest flightsim website in the world.

Well....I already posted links to alot of the payware addon developers for fs2004 and if you check out the screenshots on thir websites it will give a good idea just how detailed it becomes in fs2004.

I think it will be difficult to compare x-plane and fs2004 with screenshots simply because x-plane is primarily freeware addons made by users of the sim, and are simply because of that not as detailed as those made for fs2004 by payware developers. So it wouldnt be fair to compare those two against eachother, unless you compared then both only with freeware addons.

If your only use freeware addons, then go for x-plane since it looks better by default and planes handle better by default.

If you plan to use payware addons, well then there is not really any choice. The FS2004 is the way to go. The sim is used to train real world pilots using some of those addons. You get planes/cockpits that a modeled down to the smallest detail in systems. basicly if you press this button in the real plane, then you will have to do it in the addon aswell to get it to work.
Airports are detailed down to the smallest detail with scenery addons, and mesh are satelite true.

this is seriously impressive, but 60 GB of space is a bit much, unless you dont have to install them all and actually load em when necessary.
how is it split up on the 7 dvds anyway, is it like 1 dvd for every continent (roughly)?

I don't have that 7 DVD set yet, so I'm not sure. But if its anything like older x-plane scenery its probably divided into square areas that you can install individually. So you could install the scenery only for your part of the country you want to fly in.

Swinefur. The size is this big is not because of the complexity of the sim. It's the scenery from the whole earth that takes up so much space.

I think hes confused, as MSFS in not a complex sim at all.

They sure are insane. I must add that those come from a modified x-plane version, as x-plane out of the box doesnt run at those resolutions. And if it did, you could not buy a gfx card to run it at any fps Razz
