I'm debating between the NEC 3550A Retail and the Pioneer 111D OEM. I had a NEC 3540A that I bought from Newegg and it broke after 4 months. Was mine just a lemon? What should I go with? Should I wait for the Plextor 760A to come out? Is it worth the extra $50-$70 it's probably going to cost? Does anyone know when the successor to the 3550A is coming out. I Know the 111D has 4x dvd-ram writing.

I have two NEC burner (ND-1100A and ND-3500A) and i'm quite satisfied with them, guess you had just bad luck. Plextor these days lack in writing quality and are not worth the high price. The successor of the 3550A is already out for a while here in Europe, the 4550A and the 4551A (with labelflash). Personally i would buy either the 4550A or a Benq DW-1650 wich features Solidburn and is a better reader than the NEC.
