Civilization IV

- Publisher: No idea
- Developer: Fraxis
- Genre: Strat
- Release date: End of year
- Story/Description:
Quote: |
2005 will witness the release of Sid Meier's Civilization IV, the latest and coolest installment in the greatest strategy game series of all time. Civilization IV features breathtaking 3D graphics, cool reward movies, brilliant audio and music, and, most importantly, the best and most addictive gameplay of any strategy game ever created. As a matter of fact, Time magazine has named Civ IV one of the hottest new games this year!
A game of remarkable depth, Civilization IV spans the entirety of human history, from the stone age to the space age. At the start you choose the nation you want to lead. At first, your people are primitive stone-age villagersand its your job to guide their development and research technologies to drive their advancement. They begin by discovering more primitive technologies such as sailing, archery, mysticism, and mining; eventually - if they survive - you will lead your people to the modern era and beyond, becoming the greatest ruler in history.
During the game, you will meet other growing civilizations - the United States, Mongolia, Persia, China, India, France - there are 18, each ruled by famous historical figures. Each civilization has its own special military units and strategies - some are fairly peaceful, while others are expansionists and conquerors. You will battle your foes with a huge arsenal of weapons, beginning with primitive archers and warriors, then catapults, knights and frigates, and eventually with modern tanks, submarines, mobile infantry, helicopter gunships, stealth bombers, and nuclear weapons. However, Civilization IV is more than just a great combat game: you can achieve victory through global conquest, diplomatic cunning, cultural or religious alliances, and technological dominance.
Sid Meier's Civilization IV offersthe most fun, addictive and visually exciting Civ experience ever. In addition to faster mid- and late-game AI turns, as well as vastly improved graphics and audio, Civilization IV offers greater control over your civilization's government and religions, while at the same time de-emphasizing the less fun portions of the earlier games (cleaning up pollution, for example). Further, Civilization IV has been designed from the ground-up to deliver fantastic multiplayer gaming options, as well as easy modding - allowing you to create new units, game maps, scenarios, and even entire new civilizations!

The graphics on the avator characters for the respective nations are really sweet, but I just hate, with a passion, the way 2D games are transformed into 3D! It's stupid as there is no benefit, the game looks no better as a result, in fact; it looks worse.
Just take a look at the screeshot and tell me it doesn't look a mess visually. It's hard to discern objects from landscape, landscape from units.
3D for the sake of 3D, and they haven't took the time to give it a discernable artistic style.

Well said.
I am looking forward to this, as I have loved Civ since the start. But I am kinda worried that they could destroy something special with the move to 3D

I haven't touched the Civ. series since Civilization for Windows 3.1
How far has it progressed since then? Heh.
I have to agree, the 3d style looks messy.
On a side note, I got a kick out of this quote:
Quote: | As a matter of fact, Time magazine has named Civ IV one of the hottest new games this year! |
I ask you, what the FUCK does Time magazine know about PC Gaming?
Gotta love the useless media praise , heh.

Been playing Civilization ever since part two on the playstation.
It's damn good. Civ 3 was very good too, but a bit of a letdown. I actually liked the non-Sid Meier ones too. Call to Power and Call to Power 2.

hopefully they dont mess with the turn-based civilization gameplay as well as changing the graphics to 3d. and For the love of god, this time they better have put a realistic world map in there on 'rule the world' (or whatever) mode. i hated starting out on some funky ass map or else using a world map with the germans sprouting up in central china or wherever. and the Rise and Rule mod made civ3 what it should have been in the beginning, before it civ3 was completely dissapointing to a longterm fan like me.

Hardly, that's another campaign map that was ruined by 3D. It was functional but it left a lot to be desired and I felt, as I do with this games screenshots that the overall appearance is just too 'mudddy and messy'.
3D for the sake of 3D, that's all it is.

Let me put it another way then;
A new user to Photoshop or Paint Shop Pro will utilise all the filters in the world like a kid in a sweet shop he just can't control himself and he actually is quite pleased with the garish results.
This is what it is like to me from on observing viewpoint when developers take a '2D' aspect and turn it into a pseudo '3D' aspect (mostly from an economical sense because they think it sells better).
The result is something that actually looks worse than the previous incarnation, that also offers nothing new except a lack of discernable style and clarity. It actually detracts from where the original '2D' effort would have provided.
All of the campaign maps improvements in Rome Total War could have been implemented on a 2D map.
And lets also consider the moddability of the now 3D civilization - whole communities are sprung up around the previous games' modability. It will be interesting to see how easy it is to work with the new system.

Don't judge the graphics from a single screenshot.
Where 3D excels is in the motion. The seamless fluid animation. And viewing the game from any angle and distance. You can't find any of that in that screenshot, no matter how hard you're looking.
2D though, is perfect for screenshots.
And why asking all these stupid questions about the game?? "I hope they didn't do that, I hope they did this, blah blah blah".
Try google. There's tons of info out there. Here, I'll give you a hand:

You are correct, 3D has the potential for what you describe but when the overall image itself suffers from the afflictions described what consolation is that?
Quote: | And viewing the game from any angle and distance |
Which in games like this is more of a hinderance than a blessing. I remember in Neverwinter Nights the rotating camera was entirely superfluous.
3D can be done correctly, the trouble is it would appear not enough time is spent on actually doing just that. I don't see the need for it myself, but at the same time I'm not saying it will ruin the game - I enjoyed RTW regardless.

I dont get it.. there was NOTHING wrong with the rome total war 3D map.. compare it to the shogun map... you just draged pieces... in rome u could make your guy go into trees... up mountains.. etc etc..
For a game like CIV4.. imho 3d is a FAR FAR better option

The same improvements and more could have been implemented on the old 2D campaign map improved. It had nothing to do with the pseudo 3D campaign map they implemented. Yes there was nothing WRONG with it, but try reading what I said and taking it in rather then just ignoring it.

You can make a fucking driving game in 2d as well with the exact same physics and driving feel as a 3d game, its just the graphics that is changed, but i dont see you fuckers fucking about THAT.
CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 RAM: 4gb Kingmax DDR2 800mhz Video: Asus GeForce 250GTS 1gb Sound: Asus Xonar.

Im quite sure that civ 4 will be a quite crappy game. Mostly because the Sid team have focused on the gfx, the 3d view is NOT nessesary in a turn based game like Civ. Civ will most likly become another crappy ass RTS game =( For me Civ 2 is the best of the Civ series.
We can only pray that civ 4 will be a excellent game with the TRUE civ feeling!
