|
 |
When I started using a computer desktop PCs were the rage.
then people started using laptops, tablets and even pocket pcs for work. my desktop pc then became an entertainment center for playing games, music and movies, and browsing the internet and chatting.
Considering the expenditure to keep the pc up to date, I decided to get a xbox for my gaming needs. Fitting it with a modchip and hard drive allowed me now to not just play games but watch movies and play music. So my desktop PC is an internet access point a dumb terminal with lot of useless hardware.
But now I dont chat too much and I read my emails and browse the net through my phone. So my PC is now a 2000 dollar pile of junk and sadly nobody will give me 2000 dollars if I try to sell it maybe half of that.

The PC is too versatile to become useless. And the games you play on your X-BOX are available at the same low quality graphics through a pretty cheap PC.
If you want to stay updated with hardware etc. though, you're going to be required to shell out a lot of dough, but it has been this way since the PC became a gaming platform (from being just a business-tool).
I don't see how lots of different specialized gadgets would make the PC obsolete. A relatively modern PC is rather cheap (especially if you buy used ones) - and it covers the need for most regular users. Having the latest GFX-card/CPU/etc. is hardly required... that's just a luxury.
I don't really know what it is that you're asking here. Most people find good use for their PC:s, those that don't, and are satisfied with simpler games get a console... those who want a portable PC, get a laptop, the problem with laptops is they usually cost a lot more for less advanced hardware (performance wise).
Personally, I don't find a use for an XBOX... crappy substandard games, and lesser functions of a PC. I rather use a high-quality HDTV-connection from my PC to my TV, get a whole lot better image, and have support for eg. 7.1 surround sound, burn movies, download movies, et cetera.
Yes, yes I'm back.
Somewhat.

They're are a tool. Photoshop, CAD, C++, Maya, Apache, MySQL ect, every artist/engineer loves to have a PC in thier house, thus always giving PCs a core market.
Add Games, IM, Movies, Music, Email ect ect and you get a average joe market. Just cause consoles are cutting into the Average Joe market, doesn't mean PCs are going to go pop.
Besides hardcore gaming and IM have got a pretty unbreakable hold on an arguably significant chunk of the current generation of teenagers.
In other words, the answer is no. IMO anyway.

I made the change to console from PC gaming but still use my PC for all email, web, spreadsheet, etc activities. Much cheaper to not constantly upgrade your game pc all the time !
You wanted a Miracle, I give you the F. B. Eye !!

800-900 bucks should last 3 years (though after 3 your pc seems out of date, but it will still manage with maybe only a $200 update [less/same as a console]), if you know where to look and what to look for, if you are someone with no ideas about PCs, stick with your console and be safe and sheltered.
There is so much more versatility in a PC, games have mods, new maps, etc users make, not stuff the companies put, and most game mods and maps for consoles were made on a PC...

Consoles are for kids. The controls suck and the game designs are usually moronic.
Until everyone switches to HD tvs who wants to play games on a blurry lo-res NTSC television screen?
PCs forever baby.
