Anyone thinking of switching? The new Imac and Powerbook (now MacBookPro or whatever) now have x86 cpus.
And Steve Jobs had previously confirmed running windows xp on an x86 mac (but didnt mention it in his keynote @ macworld just recently), so it won't be long until someone gets it running.

never ever. Sometimes i have to deal with macs at work and i can honestly say i hate apple. I don't see why you want to spent more money on a mac than a pc? There is not a single task you can do better with a mac than a pc, or in terms of animations with a sgi.

If I'm able to run them on a standard ATX x86 computer (SSE3, 64bit should be considered the high end standard) I will add another partition to my computer to make it a triboot of Windows, Linux and Mac OSX. I will not be buying Mac hardware in order to run OSX even if I can run Windows on it.

After switching to Intel CPUs, what remains in Mac that makes it a Mac? I mean, what is the difference now, besides OS?

I remember an advertise a couple of years ago, about a Mac running 2 CPUs at 2 GHz. At that time it blowed me away. Now it doesn't seem such a big deal, with the latest duals from AMD and Intel. Adding dual graphics to it, the power of today's systems is impresive. Too bad Apple was not able to keep up, they've been downhill for quite some time.

whoKnows wrote: | It has to be because Apple makes its money by selling overprized hardware. It would be a catastrophe for Apple if someone would be able to crack Mac OS X for x86 to run on any pc. Poeple would buy a much cheaper "standard" pc and install OS X instead of getting the overprzed package from Apple. |
Oh it will happen, you cant stop this sort of thing..

Apple is moving away from x86(-64) to ARM-based of their own design that will be much closer to their iPhone and iPads processors and will be able to bring new hardware to market much faster than relying to Intel.
https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2020-04-23/apple-aims-to-sell-macs-with-its-own-chips-starting-in-2021
Quote: | Apple is preparing to release at least one Mac with its own chip next year, according to the people. But the initiative to develop multiple chips, codenamed Kalamata, suggests the company will transition more of its Mac lineup away from current supplier Intel Corp. |
Quote: | The changes will be a blow to Intel’s prestige. Apple Co-founder Steve Jobs and the late Intel Chief Executive Officer Paul Otellini stood on stage in 2005 to announce the first Macs with Intel processors. The decision was praised for several years, resulting in capable computers such as the original Mac Pro in 2006, the second-generation MacBook Air in 2010 and the thinner MacBook Pro in 2012.
But in recent years, the pace of Mac upgrades has declined, partly due to a slowdown in Intel’s chip advancements. That sometimes left years between Mac refreshes, upsetting some customers. Intel has also faced manufacturing challenges that Apple has blamed for some recent declines in Mac sales. |
This is seen as a big blow to Intel.
Quote: | Apple is designing more of its own chips to gain greater control over the performance of its devices and differentiate them from rivals. Getting Macs, iPhones and iPads running the same underlying technology should make it easier for Apple to unify its apps ecosystem and update its computers more often. The move would also reduce reliance on Intel, which has struggled to maintain the annual increases in performance it once offered.
“This news has negative longer-term implications for Intel, in-line with our concerns around Intel’s future market share,” Brad Gastwirth, chief technology strategist at Wedbush Securities, wrote in a note to investors. Shares of the chipmaker fell as much as 2.2% on Thursday while the rest of the market rose. |

* Bloomberg, of course, is the publication that published “The Big Hack” in October 2018 — a sensational story alleging that data centers of Apple, Amazon, and dozens of other companies were compromised by China’s intelligence services. The story presented no confirmable evidence at all, was vehemently denied by all companies involved, has not been confirmed by a single other publication (despite much effort to do so), and has been largely discredited by one of Bloomberg’s own sources. By all appearances “The Big Hack” was complete bullshit. Yet Bloomberg has issued no correction or retraction, and seemingly hopes we’ll all just forget about it. I say we do not just forget about it. Bloomberg’s institutional credibility is severely damaged, and everything they publish should be treated with skepticism until they retract the story or provide evidence that it was true. |

Its amazing what iPad Pro chip can do with apple software optimization, its just unreal performance, cant wait to see how good these can get. Lets hope apple will lower their device prices with this change (which i highly doubt), since seeing apple sells wheels to their Mac Pro for 849€ and retards buy them.

I’m sure that ’retards’ at Pixar, Lucas Arts, Sony and other studios (these products are designed for) are crying for 849€.
