running a firewall on the same computer that you want protect is a flawed concept to begin with
(esp. if you work with admin-rights under windows!)
virii and trojans can deactivate it
(click the dialogboxes faster than you can, using programs you have allowed to bypass the personal-fw...)

listen to [syn], don't connect directly to the internet and get a nat-router
(easily selfbuilt with an old pc and software like ipcop or m0n0wall)
do your every-day work with user-rights not as an admin
keep your os up-to-date
get a virus-scanner (nod32 or kaspersky)
