Am I the only one who believes this whole pixel ad "fanaticism" to be entirely fucking idiotic?
I mean, as a company, why would you pay dollars to have a few pixel ad placed among hundreds and hundreds of other ads of completley different products / services?
Does the typical internet user think: OK! I need to find a place to rent a car. I'm gonna go to the milliondollarhomepage.com and mouse around for fucking hours upon hours seeking the .0001cm ad rentacarcompany.com bought?
How the fuck is this supposed to drive you business?
I'm just entirely fucking amazed this worked. Entirely mind fucked as to the stupidity of people right now....wow.
Props to the guy for being successful, but the logic of the entire thing eludes me.

the site has more than 1 billion hits a day
so it is very useful to put your add there. Most of the sites there listed saw their visitor numbers quadruple or even more. So it pays off for the advertisers

1 billion is ridicilous, like this whole idea, i totally agree with you Immunity. Quote from the ebay auction, far from 1 billion!
Quote: | At the time of writing, MillionDollarHomepage.com has received over 1.5 million unique visitors and over 2.7 million page impressions in the last 7 days alone |

The site was created by a 1st year student here in the UK, he done it during freshers week (the first week of the first term.. its a big thing here) to pay for his University fee's. This stunt got a huge amount of media attention, it was on TV, Radio, Newspapers, Magazines, and Many websites.. so lots of companies paid to have advertising there to soak up the media attention too. The guy made an insane amount of money in the first few weeks, his goal of selling each pixel for $1 and earning $1 million DID work, and so it still continues today.
People are not paying to have they're few pixels of advertising, they're paying to be part of yet another internet famous site, and its working, as you all just saw the link .
So try not to think about this as a "Oh lets goto that pixel website to find a new place to buy stuff" - Think of it like getting /.'ed and replacing the page with a page full of adverts

What is Reach?
Reach measures the number of users. Reach is typically expressed as the percentage of all Internet users who visit a given site. So, for example, if a site like yahoo.com has a reach of 28%, this means that if you took random samples of one million Internet users, you would on average find that 280,000 of them visit yahoo.com. Alexa expresses reach as number of users per million. Alexa's one-week and three-month average reach are measures of daily reach, averaged over the specified time period. The reach rank is a ranking of all sites based solely on their reach. The three-month changes are determined by comparing a site's current reach and reach rank with its values from three month ago.
|
I would think it's 1.075% that's being shown there.

It's not something that could really be done again and succeed... Its success is due to media hype which was due to originality, not because it's particularly functional. It's about jumping on the bandwagon, when you say "why would a company pay dollars for a few pixels among hundreds of other ads?", they probably wouldn't in any other situation, without the media exposure.
It's a similar answer as to why someone got several grand for a brussel sprout on ebay...
if you think of an original/clever/humerous way to make money, it's possible it will attract the media. By attracting the media, it creates more interest and you may get people paying silly money to be some part of this fame. However it's unlikely anyone will make the same sort of money selling a sprout in the future, because it's only unique selling point was it's originality and shock factor.

http://millionquarterwebpage.com
http://millionpixelpage.com/en/
http://millionpennyhomepage.com
and so on...
but you never know if there will be another untinkable idea comming out of the box soon.
is this a promise?
might be...

check this out.
http://www.alexa.com/data/details/traffic_details?q=&url=www.milliondollarhomepage.com
i will sumarise for you:
Reach per million users:
3 month average: 1.075
and 1.075*1.000.000 = 1.075.000.000 = more than 1 billion.
and @ whoknows: the probably misinterpred the , and . thing. On the graph you can clearly see that 1500 is used and the legenda says: per million users. |
THIS IS THE REACH
the "(million)" thing is the Reach per million users: if you take a million random users there are that much that go to that site so today there are 3500 of random selected people out of the million that go to the site, or they reached 3500 people out of a million people
HOWEVER, the reach isnt the number of visitors each day. there are 416 visitors today
CONCLUSIONS
- the site doesnt have a billion visitors each day, you have to be really stupid to believe that
- the site only has a average of 1400 visitors each day
- you should learn to think before you say anything (sorry but the stallowned pic got me angry)

I'm working on something, when it's ready i'll post it, I could post my idea now, but can't risk someone using it before me, when It's ready I'll tell you all about it.
sounds lame, I know, but for now, I need to explore all the single options that I have to earn money

yeah, but in the end it comes down to the customers. In the case of ebay and the ridiculous shit they have listed on their site. Even if its about originallity or whatever, its still beyond stupid.
Would u look at say the brussel sprout auction and say "Well, thats an original idea, how about i spend 2 grand on it"...like seriously, thats fuckin retarded.
There must be an underlying reason as to why someone would spend money on something so stupid - including the pixel advertising. Whether it be a mental illness of sorts or they are simply inept, something is up.
No one in their right mind would spend those amounts of money on something so stupid.

Whoever bought it is far from stupid, that page STILL has the attention of a huge number of people, the stupid people are those who visit the site (like no doubt everyone who has read this thread..). Its people like us who are making this work and putting money in this guys pocket.. You have only yourself to blame . |
I seriously doubt whatever company bought that last 1000 pixels will recoup the money through the sole publicity of that site in any pratical amount of time . Sure, £1000 is a bargin, but not £80,000. |
Exactly my point, your not gettin a good return by advertising on that site...retarded.
