|
 |
For the past few years I've been going off the following:
Alternative Times - A roughly monthly release of upcoming or hit singles, usually a bunch of mediocre "hits" with some gems intermixed that give you a heads up on who might become big. Much of the music on these are not big hits yet but get there.
Promo_Only_Modern_Rock_MONTH - Same deal, although these are usually more what is already on the radio than the above, but occasionally a few gems.
That's pretty much it for VA stuff I look at then I usually check out all the obscure releases on #altrock/#audiorevolution (if this isn't allowed to be posted I apologize! remove at you're whim), this introduced me to some *excellent* music, from Muse to Frank Black to Charlie Mars and many excellent indie/alt bands.
How about you all? Wondering if there's anything else good to find new music since the radio seems to be controlled by fucktards who want to play the same bad music over and over and over.
Cheers.

basically i rely on 3 things.
Word of mouth - A lot of my friends are into similar music that I am ranging from friends that are into extreme metal (black/doom/death/etc) to kids that are into more mainstream rock and whatnot, to everything in between (Punk /hardcore /experimental /emo /screamo /indie /alt /acoustic /classic rock /etc)
Shows - Living so close to a major city there are a huge number of local and touring bands playing in any given week so i try and hit up as many shows as I can. At the shows there is usually a band or two that I am not familiar with and If they are decent ill pick up a copy of whatever disc they have to offer.
Random Downloads - What can I say? I've downloaded some random bands cds and have found some gems so I will continue to do so.
I never rely on any sort of mainstream press materials or television because It's usually watered down garbage these days although there are some things worth listening to out there that are popular.

Games, Movies. basically very rare times I actually see MTV and come across on some of the mainstream which often is bad but in between quite good numbers.
I usually download the OST of a good movie (which I made an exception by downloading Fantastic Four), sometimes there are super awesome tracks and I look up the artist and get everything the artist have ever made.

LastFM works good too.

People I hung around with when i was young. I hung around with guys 3-5 years older than me.
And being bored and deciding to go to a local concert.
