|
 |
Why do people say "Get a life"? What does that mean? Does that mean "You should live like me"? If so, why? I'll live my own life, thanks.
I work on computers and when I come home I spend most of my time on the computer. People don't like that so they spout some nonsense. Even my grandmother told me to get a life. Pffft! Sick of hearing that.

Maybe they mean get a real life, rather then a virtual one?

But I have a real life: I get up, I drive to work, I skip meetings and ignore coworkers, I come home and sit one the computer. What else is there?

Thats not what most people would define as a life, hence the phrase.
Thats existing.

Ahh, but what works for one, may not work for another. And vice versa. It's like saying "hey man, get a new favorite desert" Or "play another sport".

I thought living a real life was about experiencing new things. Also it's about leaving your mark, affecting the world around you. Who will remember you when you're gone if you hardly ever leave the house?
Never has 'getting a life' been about getting drunk and shagging sluts. If thats what you think then maybe you need to look at your own lifestyle, because society isn't about that at all.

Who will remember me? Well, if all goes as planned, not many. My goal is to live a long time with minimum fuss.

He doesn't mean be famous. He means making an impact on people around you somehow. Something that is impossible if the world around you is simply your own house.

Exactly. I would hate to think that at the end of my life, after I die, there will be nothing left of me, in any capacity, either tangible or intangible.

Im with you, who cares if people are gonna remember me or not after I die. Impact or not, no need to fret about whether there will be anything left of you after you die, you're dead anyway.
The point is, be kind, not too greedy, aim for your goals whether its high or low, just live your life.

that was sarcasm, many people think only cuz they party hard and screw alot of chicks, their life is alot more meaningful than someone elses, which isnt true.
its as you said, you need to leave a lasting impression in your life, hence its also important to have offspring, but this is leading into another "meaning of life" debate
which is highly subjective.

I used to think like that. But everybody affects the world around you. Even those that spend time on their computer. Chaos theory - just talking on msn with somebody, and entertaining them so much that before you started talking to them they wanted to leave the house (where they could have affected the world in some very miniscule way, but the snowballs keeps rolling) but they didn't because you were there, changes the world.
And in the end, who cares. When you're dead, I'm sure the last thing you will think about was "oh gosh, I hope I left a mark on the world".

ya but you cant just use the butterfly effect theory on everything to do,
"i just farted, prolly humanity will change for the better in a few years".
you should do something where you can plan the outcome/aim for it, instead of relying on pure chance that you ve already done something meaningful.

Not on everything. I doubt dropping your pen in class will cause a hurricane in Singapore - but it does with a lot.
I knew a guy who saw two nurses walking down a long, barren road. He used the dice - if it was even, he'd ask if they needed a ride. If it wasn't, he'd continue to drive.
It was even. Timeskip 50 years. The man has four children, and 8 grandchildren. His wife was one of those nurses.
That man was my grandfather. Over the generations to come, that decision will have helped shape the world.

When you're on your deathbed thats the only thing you'll be thinking about. You're terminally ill and no-one cares, you're completely alone. You'll wish you'd done things differently.
Your life should be as full of as many experiences as you can make it, not just one thing.
It's about actually living rather then existing, you may be content with coasting through an unremarkable life, with nothing and no-one to distinguish you. But I and many other people certainly are not.
LOL, relying on the billion to one chance that chaos theory may result in your life actually meaning something. Pathetic.
