I have owned this computer for the last years and just lately it has started to freeze for around 10 sec, play normal, freeze again, play, then final totally freeze the computer. Depending on the game it will do it faster or slower. NFS:MW it will just freeze every once in a while but for the most part play normally. Darwina freezes after about 10min. And Everquest now freezes the second I start playing. I have tried reinstalling nvidia drivers, directx drivers but this has not helped.

My computer is as followers

2600+ athlon
Nvidia 5200 gfx card
512MB

i do not want to upgrade my computer now because its not worth the money at the time and it has never done this before.

Sorry if this is not enough information but I do not know what is needed.

checked if the fans are clean, no dust etc ?

it could also be some loose cables.

It sounds like a GPU or CPU overheating problem. Try to clean out the fan or even try to play with your case open.

see that is the problem. I noticed that there was dust inbetween my gfx card and the heatsink on it, so i removed it. I also tried running games with the case open and a room ran running on full speed pointed into the case to try and get temperatures down. This did not reduce the temperature of the actual computer by much. Also it would freeze on COD2 a lot. I know it is a horrible gfx card but I enjoy playing the games for the content not the great graphics.

I agree that something must be overheating but I do not know how to stop that because I have tried cooling the computer. I have checked and the fan on my CPU still operates fine.

even though the fans are running doesnt mean that they are working properly. get a can of compressed air and blow it through the fans and heatsinks and see if the problem still persists, good luck.

Hold the fan still so it doesn't spin. You can kill the fan if you let it spin freely when using compressed air.

Can I ask how long this has been going on? I had the same problem with a similar generation AMD CPU and was 99.9% sure that was the cause as switching to Intel fixed it (although mobo could have been problem too).

It would do exactly the same thing, freeze immediately, a few seconds or a few minutes into the game. I was quite aggravated.

I had an ATI9700 which I kept, so I don't think that was the problem as I no longer get any crashes.

it has only been doing it for prob 3 months, with no change it hardware.

i will try the compressed air, i used to have a window on my case but I removed it so I could etch it but i have not had time to finish it so i have been running with a giant hole on the side of my case. I am guessing that leads to problems.

I had almost the same thing like you;turned out to be overload of dust in coolers,so CPU was frying(check my useless void thread about it).Went to shop and they put this badass new cooler + cleaned the dust.

ok i finally got ahold of some compressed air and cleaned out the inside of my computer. It is now working a lot better then it was before. Its crazy that a little or a lot in my case of dust can make that much difference. My internet also just happened to stop connected and after i cleaned out the dust, it works. So thanks for the tip.
