|
 |
I was sitting here thinking about ditching Zone Alarm as sometimes a new update makes it go slow and so...
Was thinking about getting Avast! Free version as it seems to work great and be great too.
But then I came to think about the stupid firewall thingie here...
Got dynamic IP but it only updates if I tells it too do that so as long as I want it to be it is more like static.
So I was thinking about using only the built in firewall in WinXP SP2 or no firewall at all...
But seriously guys, whats the worst thing that could happen if I used only the built in firewall/no firewall?
I am not having that much knowledge in network/internet security so I thought wtf lets ask...
any suggestions appreciated.
and whomever says "Norton" will be granted with a kick in the ass...

It depends on your surfing behaviour and the programs you use. How are you connected to the net, if you have a router, chances are that it already has a firewall build in. The Windows inbuild firewall only filters incoming traffic, not outgoing. I am still using Kerio Personal Firewall 2.1.4, it's very old, but i like it. The newer ones are overkill in my opinion, they check whenever a process is started, if this window is allowed to open etc... I guess the windows firewall should be sufficient for most users, just try it, i mean you are still using a virus scanner, so it's not that risky.

The people who actually have the ability to hack the shit out of you wouldn't waste their time.
Firewalls for users is useless.

Firewalls for users is a must nowadays, with all the open exploits in M$-OS.

Is the best one.

I am not going to get a router, that is for sure. Don't feel like wasting the time and money to configure and pay one.
So a firewall is a must in the end? It was mostly those exploits that can get viruses and other malicious code running on my PC I was worried about.
Then my surfing behaviour is not extreme (no pornographic bullshit sites or "crack for apps" sites (like astalavista and so on) ). More than that I only surf forums and checking mail and so on. Other than that I play games online.
Will check out look 'n' stop firewall thingie and perhaps pair it up with Avast!.

hm... a half-year ago i have a ZoneAlarm firewall, but when i buy router i uninstall it, cuz' the windows firewall + router firewall enough for me. but i think if you don't have a router and use windows xp or 2000 you must install firewall. i think Kerio, and ZoneAlarm are best firewalls, cuz' they very lite, and don't make problems.

I would say get a router, too!
Build in firewall - more than one pc on one line - no more cables (if you use wlan) - no more dialing up - no more manually updating your dyndns (or whatever) account.
Your router does it all for you and its a lot safer...
good ones aren`t so expensive.
I would go with an cheap wrt54g (linksys) or one with asimilar chipset.
Many modded firmwares out there - easy to setup and stable.
there are even routers (siemens it was i think...) with an usb port.
with a modded firmware you can use them as file/ftp/whatever server with an external usb drive...

about the "no more dial-up" and that stuff and let the router handle it...
My ISP are kind enough to make sure no username, password, dyndns or anything at all is required to be set...
Plug the adsl modem into the phone jack and then the modem to the PC and it is all ready to go.
