On topic though, the amount of aid nations and gullible people trying to clear their conscience send in would be sufficient to prevent this if it were used to establish a stable government, create jobs, and rebuild the economy. Instead it's going mostly into political causes (getting the already corrupt leaders of those nations wealth) and direct food contributions, which doesn't do anything for these people.
If all the money sent to those nations was pooled to pay for local people to build factories, tech support centers and other mass-employment businesses that would generate good (by local standards) paying, no education required jobs, these people would have money of their own to spend, which means that they could buy basic necessities such as clothing, food, and materials for shelter etc. Soon enough, the people that work in the factories start sending money home, and you have a steady source of income. In other words, the nation would with steady investment yield good financial returns and there would be a certain distribution of wealth, allowing for them to import/export their own food/clothing. Thailand, Taiwan, and many other asian countries operate on this principle, and their situation has gone from wearing plastic bottles and starving to being relatively well-supplied.
All that is needed is for someone with major funds, that would be sympathetic enough to build places like that in countries that would generate less revenue than current third-world manufacturers.
Of course, for that to work something would need to be done to improve the political situation, which in many of these countries is corrupt and tyrannical. That's one for the political people though, I'm as good with politics as I am with women.
