It came in over the Reuters newswire today that Sony has announced it’s marketing plan for Blu-ray movies being released this summer. This new media format will debut in the same price range as DVD’s when they hit the shelves back in 1997 with new releases going for $23.45 and “catalog” titles selling at $17.95. That’s all well and good you might say, but what’s that have to do with the PSP? Sony also announced that they will be selling special “bundle” packages for DVD and Blu-ray movies that include the UMD version of the film as well. Starting March 28, you will be able to find the DVD-UMD combo packs for:
* The Grudge
* Resident Evil
* Underworld
* Crouching Tiger, hidden Dragon
* The Terminator
These releases will be followed by a second release April 25 for the following movies:
* Ghostbusters
* Mad Max
* The Fifth Element
* Snatch
A third set of combos will be released sometime in May. These combos will sell for $28.95 (MSRP) which could count as a deal in some cases. This new marketing strategy sets up Sony’s future goal with Blu-ray to “try to introduce the managed-copy concept, where if you buy Blu-ray you'll be able to get additional versions (of the same title) to use in your home. Ultimately, we might even get to the point where we'll offer consumers the ability to have different versions of the same movie on different devices in the home -- that's something we're working on," says Sony Pictures Home Entertainment president Benjamin Feingold.

This seems like a good move for Sony with many people upset with the price for UMD movies. I think that you should get all formats when you buy a movie, becasue your buying the licence, not the media.

You're paying for the media/packaging as well.
If movie studios wanted to take a serious approach to stopping piracy (rather than scare tactics like they're using now), they would sell films in stores for $9.99 ($5 for licence, $3 for media, $2 for distribution) or allow people to download a strongly DRMed DVD-Image from the web for $5 which they could burn once on as many formats as they wanted, transfer to iPod etc. ($5 for licence). I'm sure many people would prefer to have a user-friendly interface which would handle conversion and burning for them as opposed to having to get your hands dirty with something like the software I'd use to get a movie on an iPod/PsP (DVD>AVI with SmartRipper, DVD2AVI, Headac3he, VFAPI Reader, and VirtualDub, then AVI > PSP with whatever), and which would produce optimal quality, compared to something like DVDx which is one relatively complicated (think VirtualDub) step but usually yields shit results and takes forever.
Then again movie studios will never actually get past being greedy bitches, so this will be kind of like the LP>8track>CD>MP3 process, where you have to repurchase your library in the new format with minor improvements every time it comes out. For the consumer, anyway, I'm sure tech-literate ppl will be posting HD-Xvids you can burn onto a DVD pretty much the day they release the disc.

would rather leech the film and convert the AVI
But we're talking about people that wouldn't know how to convert a film with a program whose only screen was something like:
Step 1. Insert your DVD into your DVD drive
Step 2. Click, with your left mouse button, on the "CLICK HERE TO CONVERT" button below
Step 3. When asked, insert your memory stick Duo or plug in your PSP
