Looks like a very interesting handheld; just need a little convincing to buy it. There is not really enough information around or pictures regarding this! Sad

Anyone know any more about this?

Since it's just a linux device it doesn't have any retail games at all and relises on the community to make their own games or port others.

Which is the fantastic thing about it, also it plays back various forms of media types, MP3, DivX, WMA etc, making it a perfect multimedia machine.

Some of the guys I live with have the GP2X and I have been following the scene since its release in late December. Firstly, the version avalible right now is retail hardware, but its firmware is far from complete and is still very buggy, although it works and is certainly usable the Game Park team have a long way to go before it can be seen as a fully retail worthy console.

As for the console itself the specs are as follows:

* CPUs Dual-core: ARM920T (host 200 MHz) + ARM940T (200 MHz) - Overclockable by software
* Chipset: MMSP2
* NAND Flash ROM: 64 MB
* RAM: SDRAM 64 MB
* Operating System: Linux based OS
* Storage: SD Card (SDIO support probable in future)
* Connection: USB 2.0 High Speed
* Power: 2 × AA battery
* Display: 3.5 in 320×240 color TFT LCD
* TV out: yes (with optional cable; S-video only, not to mention audio relay)
* AC power: 3.3 V
* Physical size: 142mm wide, 82mm high, 27mm deep (exc. joystick) approx

Just to note a few things about the specs.. The dual-core CPU's, one is for general CPU and the other is for media, the developers have not unlocked this seccond CPU for use within homebrew *YET*, however in time they should be able to do this. The OS is linux based, but is bound by "warrenty" which is very strange for a GPL sourced device, either way you are stuck with officially released OS/firmware if you wish to keep your warrenty, they will however give you a replacement if you happen to break the console while flashing firmware Wink..

The console itself is wonderful at what it does so far, its emulators almost all run at top speed and the game ports produced so far are also great. However, without the use of the seccond CPU you can find lag with 3D intensive games, as no hardware 3D accelleration is in the system. I would guess that once the seccond CPU is unlocked this will mainly be used to handle GFX processing, taking the load of the first CPU, this should increase speed 10fold.

Currently the device does nothing my PSP can't, so I wont be buying one. But remember, this is a 2 month old device and has already caught up to the PSP's homebrew scene (ok, so it is made much easier due to it being a GPL device Razz).. My point being that in time this device will scream past both the PSP and DS in terms of homebrew.

Wrong, the device will have retail games in the future, how good they will be is a different matter Wink.

This I don't really understand. Sounds like they are trying to find a kernel hack or something?
Surely they could have designed it so that both CPUs were usable from the offset?

Like I said, one of the CPU's is for general computing, the other is for the devices media, like divx decoding and mp3 decoding. They are looking for a way to turn that CPU into something that can be used for other things when the decoding is not going on.

Im more interested in it's video quality on the playback on TV. With my psp I end up having to re-size movies for it to be displayed correctly. Have you seen them hooked to the TV [sYn]; whats the quality like?

I like the fact it resizes the movies to fit which I can see as an advantage on TV sets.
