2006 Winter olympics game simulation
Qwixes ok to HDD & plays ok
Very small install @ 300MB
3 difficulty levels
Crisp graphics & okayish commentary during events. Luge was quite good - real impression of speed as you skate down an ice tunnel on a tea tray with your ass on fire(!)
Good game if you like this type of sim though it can get irritating when the commentary starts to take the p*ss out of you for missing a gate, etc
You wanted a Miracle, I give you the F. B. Eye !!

I racked my brains for the other Winter Sports game that I have on Xbox and eventually tracked it down. The name being Konami's ESPN Int'l Winter Sports 2002, although thats another game that had mixed reviews (don't all these types of games) I found it to be substancially more enjoyable and the events to be more convincing. Overall it feels like a more complete/polished and finished game. Its completely different to Torino though its more old school and arcadey from the cheesy music to the typically noisy Konami style menues. The events are downhill, slalom, k90, k120, moguls, halfpipe, curling, speed skating and figure skating. Gameplays all about smashing records, button bashing, quick timer events and if your successful within the game you can unlock costumes for the different characters.
If you like Torino 2006 then you may like ESPN Int Winter Sports 2002 as well Bugulous its another small game too, I had it on a multi disc with 3 other games.
Torino is definetly my style of game but overall it was a letdown to me - Hyper Sports and Combat School are two of my favourite oldies the events were challenging and extremely addictive. Virtua Athlete as well in multiplayer on the Dreamcast is cracking.
Each to their own opinions though thats what its all about.

Thanks, I wouldn't be surprised if I have that ESPN snowboarding game and its been one of those that went on for 10-15 minutes then was never to be played again sounds fairly typical of me.
Its the SSX series all the way for me *gaming perfection*, that and 1080 on the N64. Never really had any interest in those types of games until that showed up. I've got Amped 1-2 and Transworld Snowboarding as well, Transworld is quite nice - eclectic mix of bands, nice character models, different boards, career mode, loads to unlock, imaginative and very interactive courses (if you like wildlife running across the course when your trying to go down it) the game also runs at a fair whack when your speeding down the mountains. Im not keen on the trick system, that comes from an SSX player though....obviously to me anything thats different or not as intuitive as SSX isn't gonna appeal to me as much.
Amped 1-2 im not so keen on. Hated the trick system and the game fealt very sluggish, theres alot to do in it though thats where its strength lies - quantity over quality doesn't cut it with me though...both of those games score highly across the sites so clearly its a matter of taste and what you look for in a game.
Im messing around on T3 Redemption and Sphinx the Cursed Mummy at the moment, after recommending them to russ_beer in the other thread I had to just dig them out.

Was that Daley Thomson's decathlon? If thats the one your meaning yeah I had that and the olympic challenge game on the spectrum. I always remember the games for their humour, the lucozade product placement, the ending sequence where your character would weep alongside the podium whilst the winner stood taking the applause and the publisher/developer Ocean - they were like the equivalent of EA today, like a sausage machine just pumping out game after game after game after game. Them and Codemasters with their "simulator" series of games, biggest whores of the 80's by far.
Theres a java based version of Hypersports online - along with stuff like Green Beret, Commandos, Frogger, Donkey Kong series, Bomb Jack, Mario Bros, Pac Man and Yie ar Kung Fu to name a few of the games.
I gave it a quick go last night after making my first post in this thread, not as good as the emulated arcade versions it runs a little too slow meaning its easy to smash the records but its a good timewaster.

where are these java versions Star? I wanna play Hyper sports again!!
Ocean were whores, but they were the finest ho on the block in the 80-90s.
Robocop, midnight resistance, rainbow islands, renegade, daley thompsons, f29 retaliator, they were quality. Not the shameless type of whoring that EA do, shagging out the same tired pervert all the time.
Ocean were selective about which punters cock got sucked.
(ok enough whore terminology!!)

@russ_beer I didn't like to put up a URL because the site has alot of stuff on it that even though old is still copyrighted material so heres a hint. Google "1980 games" click on the first URL in the search results then click the US/UK flag when your on the site to change to english also check out the nes section they have its pretty good.
Its a good distraction as I said but personally I would go with the arcade emulation through Mame. I use Mame32 with one of the latest complete arcade romsets and if you look on the left of the screen in the Mame32 interface someones added a really nice feature to filter out years/genres/manufacturers and the like.
I filtered on the genre "Track" and was left with Field Day, 88 Games, Gold Medalist, Hunchback Olympic, Hyper Athlete, Hyper Sports, Mach Breakers aka Numan Athletics, Mystic Marathon, Nagano 98, Recordbreakers and Track and Field. Alot of those I was already familiar with but I spent around an hour working my way through some of them and there still pretty enjoyable games. Even the graphics and sound which should have aged when you take into account how old they are aren't that bad - they have character.
Yeah about Ocean, amongst all of the releases there was some really good stuff and I can remember the majority of their stuff selling at budget prices even though it was really high quality? Like £2.99 for a tape. I was messing around on google trying to find out where they disappeared to and in doing so you see entire websites and still active forums still dedicated to them. Also Target Renegade on the spectrum - pure class.

I was just gonna burn this with a few other games and a menu, so I looked on walmart.com for the boxart and description. You've got to admire their honesty when you read the 1st sentence under "Features and Specifications":
http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=4630987
Quote: | Torino 2006 represents a mere pittance of what the actual Olympic games offer, and it still manages to screw up the scant few events it tries to represent. |
Nice!
