Quote: | March 14, 2006 - Though Sony has been steadfast in sticking with its "Spring 2006" launch timeframe for the PlayStation 3, the morning edition of Japanese business paper Nihon Keizai Shimbun is reporting that the system will see its release pushed back until early November of this year.
Citing problems with finalizing the copy protection scheme for Blu-ray, which the PlayStation 3 will employ as its removable media, Nihon Keizai Shimbun believes that the system will hit store shelves some six months later than expected. According to the paper, the Blu-ray copy protection problem is the only thing holding back the release of the console as its other core parts, including the cutting edge Cell processor, are all on schedule.
IGN contacted Sony US representatives who unsurprisingly told us, "Sony Computer Entertainment does not comment on speculation stories."
Stay tuned for more information, which may be sooner than later as the PlayStation Business Briefing 2006 is set to begin in Japan at roughly midnight PST tonight.

this just pisses me off, sony needs to just say fu to the people of the aacs and put the ps3 out before the protection people are ready. I mean hell they arnt the ones building the ps3 and possibly(not likely) going to lose money.

Sony should have just drop the Blu Ray gimmick. PS3 games will still be on DVD9, so why Blu Ray? The system could've been way cheaper also.
If you hate it, ignore it.

Sony will really lose market share to MicroSuck - they need to apply for Donald Trump's "The Apprentice" so they can learn how to do Da Bizz ;-B

Sony Computer Entertainment president Ken Kutaragi finally gave some official details about the PS3 at the PlayStation Business Briefing 2006 in Japan.
He confirmed that the PlayStation3 is delayed because the copy protection isn't ready with Blu-ray, but we'll get a worldwide launch in North America, Asia and Europe early (within first 10 days of) November 2006.
They will produce the PS3 at a rate of 1 million units per month and should have 6 million units released by march 2007.
The final PS3 development kits will be shipping to developers in June 2006.
To prevent piracy all PS3 games will come out on Blu-Ray discs only, not on CD/DVD. The console will of course be able to read PS1 CDs, PS2 DVDs and DVD movies.
Sony also announced that the PlayStation 3 will be 100% backwards compatible with PS1 and PS2 games, and all titles played on the system will be displayed at high-definition resolutions.
The PS3 will ship with a, completely upgradeable, 60GB hard drive right out of the box. Publishers have been told to develop titles with the assumption that the console will have a HD. Kutaragi also said the HD will support Linux OS and will act as a home server where users can store their media on.
The PS3 will include a built-in Wi-Fi connection that can serve as a wireless access point for the PSP.
Sony also unveiled some details of their online plans ('PlayStation Network Platform'). At launch the console will get community tools (lobby matching and voice chat) and commerce features (like in-game shopping and game downloads to the hard drive). The "basic" service will be free of charge.
No new software announcements or pricing details were made, maybe something for the GDC next week?

What's with all these people hating on Sony?
Yeah, Sony is in really big trouble. Let's see, they beat Nintendo at their own game with PS1.
They beat Microsoft's supposedly more powerful XBOX with PS2. What are the numbers, hmmm, they still dominate Nintendo and Microsoft with a 70% market share; yeah they are really hurting in the videogame business. The bottom line is, Sony is still number one and will continue to be number one in the next generation. I'm not a fanboy either, I love games in general, but there's no denying that Microsoft has their work cut out for them. It will be interesting.

The point is: Sony relies heavily on Console Market, which Microsoft doesn't. There was a thread in another forum, the poster stated that Sony could go down with the PS3. Sony has 2 options:
-selling the PS3 for a price they make profit with. I guess this price would probably be around 800-1000$. I don't think there would be many people that would want to spend so much money, even if its the PS3
-doing what Microsoft did: lose money with every sold console. If the price is around 500$, they still lose about 200$ with every PS3 sold... i don't remember the numbers exactly, but in the thread i read, the poster said that if Sony doesn't manage to make it in the profit zone in year 4, they could loose more money than they could ever make with it again.
Of course, i don't think Sony will go bankrupt, but if they don't get the sales they need for whatever reason, they could loose their status as leader in the console wars... and Microsoft has enough money, we all know that...

Didn't see this one coming....
Lucky for Sony they still have such a big fanbase, people would wait until 2008 and still be excited about it.
Behold his GLORY! Bow for the technical master!

I don't disagree with most of what you said, especially the fact that Microsoft has more liquidity than Sony does, no question. Just reading forums though, you see people going crazy about this shit. Blu Ray WILL be successful because it's being implemented into PS3 from the get go. The success of DVD in general is owed in large part to the success of PS2. Granted, it was a bare bones DVD player, but it was a DVD player nonetheless. There's other things I like about PS3 that people don't bring up. Wireless connection, USB ports, memory card access (CFlash, SDigital, etc.), but the most important thing of all is developer support. Microsoft has already lost it in Japan; their launch was abysmal over seas. It all comes down to games and you can't deny that key franchises belong on Playstation products and probably will in the future.

@TuSeiSkeefoso:
"Blu Ray WILL be successful"
What th- How do you KNOW?
"you can't deny that key franchises belong on Playstation"
How can you say they BELONG on Playstation? Why do games belong anywhere as long as they are played just as good on both systems?
I see that little fanboy in you man. It creeps out for air.

Apparently you're slow. Most movie companies are already signed on to support Blu Ray over HD-DVD. If Sony sells half of what they've sold with PS3's that they did with PS2, it will already be successful. When I said belong I meant titles like Metal Gear, most RPG's (Square/Enix) etc. Just like Mario is associated with Nintendo. You won't see these titles on 360. Thats not fanboyism, it's just facts.

Actually its near 50/50 on BR & Hd-DVD support with now alot more that was on BR only coming to the HD-DVD camp. We all know BR is a Sony product and they must have BR in the PS3 for even the format to be able to enter the market in any numbers. Now they must release the PS3 at a decent price to get into people's homes and take a massive loss on the hardware they have put into the PS3, if they don't do this then the BR format will die on its arse, i doubt it will just simply because of the Playstation Brandname is well know enough to support the new format

If xbox had of came out around the same time as ps2 things would of been closer, but sony still would have won due to return customers from ps1's success, even though in my opinion the xbox was the far better console ( i hardly ever used my ps2 as i preferd xbox and the games).
Cant really say it is any suprise that ps3 will be delayed, i wouldnt be suprised if it dosent surface until 2007.
