A developer of the critically-acclaimed strategy game Galactic Civilizations II has posted a message discussing how an employee of the company behind the StarForce copy-protection had the nerve to link to a site distributing torrents of the pirated version of the game on the StarForce message boards. This was supposed to prove that "several thousands of people are downloading the pirated version" after the developers decided to not use the StarForce copy protection or similar methods. The developer of the game, Stardock, believes the primary weapon in fighting piracy is "rewarding customers through convenient, frequent, free updates" if they have a legit serial number.

This is not the first time StarForce has received criticism. For more info on that, check the StarForce article on Wikipedia.

why is it stupid, how does it hurt them?

btw, you can get GalCivII updates easily even without a legit serial.

What about thousands of downloads of starforce-protected games ?
Someone should post the link to them too.

What the dev company said is true.

With a legit game you get multiplayer, unhassled access...and updates and all that shit.

Not to say that isnt available illegally either, but not all patches for games are cracked, just major ones it seems and the multiplayer option is always cracked like Rainbow Six Lockdown or SWAT 4.

I still prefer buying games if they are worth it - in terms of replay value and support. I bought Star Wars Empire At War for that reason. illegal version is too much of a hassle, i wanna play online was I complete both single player campaigns and u could prolly play the game 10 times and still have a different game each time. Just like the Total War Series....awesome games and I still play RTW and RTW:BI

No StarForce in SpellForce 2

In response to some negative reactions to the inclusion of StarForce copy protection in the recent SpellForce 2 demo, Aspyr sends along a clarification (thanks BluesNews) that although the demo features StarForce, the North American release of the game will incorporate some other form of copy-protection:

Aspyr Media is responsible for publishing the North American release of Spellforce 2. We wanted everyone to know that Starforce will *not* be included in the retail release of this game. Starforce is being used in the demo in cooperation with the European publishers of the title, JoWood Productions. This is to help prevent reverse engineering that could lead to our product being put up on illegal software networks. We apologize for any inconveniences Starforce may have caused and would again like to reassure everyone that we have chosen alternative copy protection software for our final release product. Thank you for your interest in Spellforce 2!

Many starforce games have a CD-key that works for all games, and are publically available. Please stop it with the disinformation and hysteria.

Codemasters have put up their CD-keys officially also, (eg. for Soldiers: Heroes of World War 2).

The protection on those games aren't the CD-key.

So, what's the point of having CD-Keys?
