I think all of us are escapists to some degree. Discuss.

My reality is my reality, I cannot possibly escape it. Maybe in death I can, who knows. But your reality is not my reality and will never be my reality. Who's to say that what society percieves as reality is trully reality?

It's not, and who is "society?" Isn't reality what one defines it as? If so, how can there be one reality compared to an infinite multitude of perceptions on it?

But what you define as reality is not necessarily the same as what I define as reality. For all we know there is no reality, just what we perceive. By society I mean everyone other than me. The 'general public' if you prefer. Or perhaps you have some better name for it? |
Right, but society can be a force (social pressures) or a group of people with the power to exert that force. In this case, the latter, although you're not really socially bound by everyone else out there. I doubt that a kid in Ethiopia who has never heard of phones/cars/etc. will change your actions much.
Reality is there, but each of us percieves it differently. If there were no reality, we would have never discovered any historical items, as they would have disappeared with the death of the last person to know about them. There is a dynamic physical "reality", but if I were to start percieving reality the way another person does, it might seem to me like a bad LSD trip.

I see reality purely as a personal perception of what is registered by your senses. E.g. the historical items you mention are only part of your personal reality if your senses somehow registered their existence (e.g. by seeing them or hearing about them). If not, the artifacts do not exist in your reality. They may or may not be part of someone else's reality. In fact, they may still exist in your reality while someone else physically destroyed them, but you don't know about the destruction.
