"Last year, my work PC suddenly began blue-screening (crashing) any time I popped an audio CD into either of my two optical drives. I went online and learned that other people were having this problem and that it appeared to be StarForce-related. Deleting my StarForce-protected games did nothing. I had to run a StarForce-removal utility before my system — filled only with legal, licensed software — could play audio CDs again.
StarForce Technologies, the company that makes StarForce, seems to think that problems like mine aren’t real — or that, if they are, they’re happening only to pirates. Not too long ago, they even launched a contest on their website (www.star-force.com) called “Prove It!” If you could prove to them that StarForce had physically damaged your optical drive (a long-standing internet rumor), SFT would pay you $10,000. According to them, no one proved it."
This is your problem right here. StarForce thinks it need not answer to consumers. When people finally wake up and sales tank - which is why StarForce is so defensive about its junk - they will answer. Nevermind how shady that company is, the constant allegations that there are former pirates involved IN the company, and the increasing amount of disdain from mainstream sources. That little crap factory will start leaking cash, and then they'll go the legal route and claim everyone's out to get them and attempt to sue to keep afloat.
It's much like their claims that pirates are running a smear campaign. It just so happens that crackers have the most knowledge about the protection scheme, but even the uneducated can draw the link between "No StarForce, no crashy" and "after StarForce, colossal fuckup."
I own 0 games with StarForce, and I've never INSTALLED a game with StarForce, nor will I ever.
