Roger Ebert says he hates videogame movies. Therefore, I can't accept his review as being fair.
I was really looking forward to this (a videogame movie with a skilled directory FFS!), but I'm getting a little worried since they (for the most part) didn't screen it for critics.
Still, something like this makes me a little happy ...
Quote: | Now there’s one thing horror fans have been buzzing about since day one. With an R rating, blood must follow. In this, Silent Hill does not disappoint. There are moments in this movie where you expect the usual cutaway from what will be an exceptionally sticky scene … and happily that doesn’t happen! The terrors of Silent Hill rip through its inhabitants with barely a pause in their steps. These are demons with an agenda christened with lots of the red stuff! By the time the movie climaxes, the sets are so red, any true horror fan will stand up and clap ... most likely to the odd glances of the normal folk nearby, but don’t be shy! Give the director his due. I haven’t seen a body count like this since Kong, but alas, the big furry guy didn’t leave bloody monkey prints. Now THAT would have been a completely different film, eh?
Silent Hill is without a doubt the most faithful adaptation of a video game ever made while still being a damn fun ride. You are looking at 30% mystery and 70% pure horror. There is more blood, human remains, and in-your-face kills in this film than we’ve seen on the screen in a looooong time. So now, take note. Tell your friends. I fully expect you to get to the movies on opening weekend and make Silent Hill number 1!! You’ve been screaming for more blood on your horror plate. Now you’ve got it. |

and
Quote: | There’s a mystery at the heart of the film, and as with many ghost stories, the answer is far more mundane than the build-up. Roger Ebert seemed to find the film’s explanations baffling even as he was impressed by it technically. I’m not sure why this would confuse anyone... basically it boils down to a vengeful spirit looking for payback against the town that did it harm... but I also think the answers are far less important than the way the questions are presented. For example... I have no idea what the fuck Pyramid Head is, or how he’s connected to the Demon, or what purpose he serves aside from freaking my shit out, and frankly, I don’t care. He’s one of the most striking images I’ve seen in a horror film in recent memory, and both of his big scenes are exhilarating. If you’re tired of teenagers in danger and you’re tired of remakes of Asian titles, SILENT HILL is a fascinating antidote. If you’re the kind of person who finds surrealism frustrating and you want something more traditional, this may not be your cup of tea.
Still... this satisfied my craving for something new, and I loved the fact that this is a hard-R. There is much blood spilled, and much red meat shown onscreen, so gorehounds are going to flip. |

Reviews don't matter.
Brotherhood of the wolf was god damn awesome movie. Loved the action. Loved the direction. Loved everything about it.
Even if the acting and the story is shit, the feel and the look of the movie surly cannot disappoint .
I wish I could go today or anytime this / next week. Fucking finals are ruining my life
* if anyone sees it tonight, post your thoughts *
You got doom 3 and uwe boll trash to compare it to. If it's better than any of them i'll be happy

Just came back from seeing it. They did a really good job following the game. A lot of times during the movie I was like "I remember that from the first one (or the second)." It started to fall apart towards the end and was a little too long but they did a good job and I liked it.

You should probably use spoiler tags when explaining the ending to those who havent yet seen it. You put Silenty Hills ... made me laugh lol.
Spoiler: | In one explanation, someone said that Rose and Cybil were both dead and died at the start after they both crashed when they first entered Silent Hill. The other idea was of course that Rose and Sharon were both stuck in the limbo world at the end of the movie. |
Spoiler: | quoted from a reply on imdb.com.
Rose and Sharon can't leave because they are dead. Rose either died in the car crash or when Christobel stabbed her. The car crash is plausible because the police found the car yet Rose still uses it long after the police would have towed it away. The stabbing is likely because she looked like she was dying and then she suddenly heals. The healing results from her death and now Alessa can sustain her because she is fully in her world.
The sad part about this is that you always knew they could never really leave. You don't see that kind of *beep* and just go back to your life. And the fact that Sharon was part of Alessa also prevented the poor kid from leaving. This was kind of sad but it worked far more than other movies with similiar endings. |
There seems to be no real explanation but it is left open for the viewer to decide.
Maybe this one is the best lol!
Spoiler: | Rose found her daughter. They drove home. It was foggy. Sean Bean was very sleepy. |
May the NFOrce be with you always.

This movie was THE BEST video game adaptation ever. The way it transitioned from normal to "shit" world was great. Pyramid Head showing up was a not really necessary, but seemed of more and homage to the game and those that played the game. It was still really cool to see him and he definately needs to be in the 2nd one if they ever make it. The enemies, music, and the ambient noise was great; coming straight from the game. Though I could see where people who never played the game would be a little confused.
As far as the ending....
Spoiler: | I thought the ending was fine, there was that exposition spot where the little girl explains what happens and even though it strays from the game a little, it is still good. I did chuckle at some of the barb wire deaths. Some of them seemed, a little over the top. If they make a second one they should have it where Sean Bean's character (Christopher was it?) goes back to look for his wife and sharon. Like if he recieves a letter or something in the mail. I could see where the themes from the 2nd game with James Sunderland could be similar with Christopher's. All in all, great movie. |

It was a great film, I loved it, although there are a few inconsistencies:
Spoiler: |
For example, the police found the car, yet there was no body in it, so obviously the women didn't die in the car yet she uses the car after the crash. So, did the car come into the alternate reality with her? Well if it had the police wouldn't be able to find it. So if the car didn't come through, but she still uses it then that must mean there are two cars, one in the real world and another in the alternate reality. Why would the physical body of the women pass through, yet the car is duplicated? Doesn't make sense.
Another example the police chief (sheriff?) is walking around perfectly fine in the real world, he is a normal person aged about 40. Yet he was present in the aftermath of Alyssa's burning, he rescued her remember. Except he looked exactly the same back then as he does now. That was over 30 years ago. Either he looks great for a 60 odd year old or thats an error. It can't be his dad in the flashback either because he had the burn marks on his hands from where he tried to rescue her. |

Silent Hill was really a gore movie much more than anything else. I can't really say much for faithfulness to the original games, never played them, but the movie itself was watchable (although it had a handicam feeling at times, and the production didn't really justify it - it wasn't an amateur movie.)
Generally, if you like gore in your movies, you'll like this one. In that respect, it was quite creative. But other than that, the movie has little actual value imo. It felt more like a light snack than a 3-course meal.
Overall, I'd give it 6/10 for general atmosphere and storyline, 9.5/10 for visuals.

I agree, the visuals are beautiful. The first half of the movie is spectacular, but the way they mix and matched parts of the different games to create the second half makes it both bloated and confusing, I expect doubly so for people who've never played the games.
In my opinion the only way you'll really enjoy this is if you can be bothered to fill in the gaps of the narrative and create your own interpretations for events and motivations. This isn't something you should have to do for a movie if it is well written and coherent, but Silent Hill is not.
I could be bothered however, just because I love the premise of both the movie and the games. It was the same deal with War of the Worlds for me. I had read the book beforehand and loved it, as I had played the games before this. It's like having to compensate for weaknesses in a film with your own imagination.
If you can be bothered to do this I guarantee you'll enjoy the move a hell of alot more the second time around. But it all comes down to whether you find the potential of a film worth it.

I liked the look of this movie but the plot was a bit lacking, However still more then worth my money!
theres a few parts of the film that made me jump, but well its not that scary! I liked pyrimd head, i liked the chaging from normal to hell world. I didn't like the lack of creepy rabbits!

Technically, the nurses were not dead. After they slice each others' throats open, blood squirts out. If they were dead, there would be no circulation, and thus no blood. Sorry to burst the necrophile bubble there

Well, if you want to adhere to the game material they are actually the victims of a parasitic organism manifested during the nightmares of Alessa, relating to tape worms she had read about. Only they an extreme version with the capacity to control their host.
