I have an Amd Sempron (Barton) 3000+ (32bit) and 3 sticks of kingston ddr 512 Mb (PC3200)

but I am unable to run the memory @ 200 Mhz and I can't see the reason why, PC3200 means 200 Mhz, but even when I loose the timings and up the voltage, memtest will always fail when I use the ram beyond 173 Mhz.

I've heard somewhere that this could be happening because I use 3 sticks instead of 2

so I removed one of them, and tried to use the ram @ 200 Mhz and it worked fine.

when I run the ram at 200 Mhz I'm able to overclock my cpu at least 100 Mhz further

now my question is this.

what do I need the most for overall perfomance and speed, 1.5 gb running at 173 Mhz or 1 gb running at 200 Mhz.

as you know, I'm an hardcore gamer and work with image rendering and video.

with 3 sticks I cannot overclock my cpu past the 2083 Mhz
with 2 sticks I'm able to overclock the cpu at 2243 Mhz

I need an honest opinion.

thanks in advance.

Buy another stick of RAM? You will get better performance with faster speeds, if you happen to use more RAM than you have you will move into PageFile area which will of course cause slow down, but that isnt something that generally happens with game playing..

Buying another stick should allow you to run all 2Gb at 200Mhz..

My MoBo only has 3 slots, that's my problem, and I can't afford 2 brand new DDR modules, my only options are the ones I posted above.

but, I'm still unable to understand the reason why using an impar number of sticks will decrease the maximum frequency power.

The problem lies in the memory controllers and the number of "allowed" faults in the signal.

If you have 2 sticks there will be no problem for the memory controller to see errors and correct them. With more sticks though it will be more signals to watch and it must therefore go slower so it can keep up with checking them.

Another problem that exists with motherboards that only have 3 DIMM slots is that you can't have Dual Channel DDR with 3 slots. There must be one pair of sticks or two pairs of sticks and with 3 DIMM's you can't have that.

But using two pairs will create another problem too. The internal frequency will be lowered in order to maintain stability and error checking when using 4xDIMM's. 2xDIMM's is the best way to go.

Hope that helped a little atleast... Razz

when I power my pc, the first boot screen prints this msg "running memory at 173 Mhz Dual Channel Mode" with the 3 sticks!

but basicly what matters most is the frequency right?

even when a game uses lots of memory like ghost recon, what matters the most is the frequency at wich the memory's running right?

I can overclock my CPU to 2243 Mhz and reduce the memory bandwith to 83% (155 Mhz)

will that be a good configuration?

no because all that will do is slow down comunication between cpu and memory, if the cpu has a bus speed of 200 then you want to be running your ram at that speed as a minimum or you are running things below the speed it is intended to work at.
Just stick with the 2 x 512 sticks in dual channel until you can get a 2x1gb kit.
Or if you dont really notice a performance hit running the 3 sticks at a slower speed then go with that.
test both setups and then make your decission.

Haha strange that it says so as no memory controller can do that yet... It needs 2 sticks on channel 1&3 or channel 2&4 in order to be able to utilize Dual-Channel... Weird stuff... Very Happy

However I think that in-game performance would be higher with 2x512mb running at 200MHz but rendering, image creation and so on will be better with 3x512.
