Posted: Tue, 10th Aug 2004 13:53 Post subject: Next public Guild Wars event! |
|
 |
Has just been announced and kicks off October 29th through the 31st.
Did any of you play the E3 event? I did, and I loved it. I didn't really like the level 15 thing though, I would have preferred 14. There were too many Warrior/Healers out there, if you were matched up against 4 of them, it was damn near impossible to kill them.
The missions were very amusing as well, it was very easy to get into a group and charge off.
And of course, I thought the game looked really good.
The 3 public days are supposed to kick off their official beta testing phase, so I imagine some signups will appear beforehand somewhere.
Anyone else like it?

Thanks man! Can't wait. This game is at exatly the right spot. Not too much hype, and it could be the next big game IMO.

I know that Addons will cost money. So if you want to expand your game, you need to take your wallet out.

It works exactly like Diablo2 except that it has pvp as a compitition rather then mindless fighting. And the lobbies (towns) are persistent but not the combat area's (kinda like D2 since the towns always are the same but the world is randomly generated).

How is that different from any other game though?
In EQ, WoW, UO, you name it, once you kill a monster, it respawns... how is that any more persistent?
Even quests in these games, just like missions, same for everyone.
And there are pieces of the world that you can just walk out and fight in, that aren't launched as a private mission.

You really dont know the meaning of a persistent world do you? In EQ if a guild killed an uber mob that mob would stay dead for a predetermined amount of time, sometime weeks. Heck "The Sleeper" (Kerafyrm) was a one time event, as soon as he died on the server he would never spawn ever again. The world changes and stays changed, thats what a persistent world is...
Yes, in EQ, WoW and UO these worlds are persistent but in D2 and GW its NOT. When you log off or leave an area everything is reset. You can kill diablo or Baal everytime you enter the world, theres no timelimit dependant of his spawn. Even items sold to merchants or dropped are not persistent, as soon as you leave the world those items disappear.
The main definition is that the worlds of a TRUE MMORPG are generated upon entering, they are predetermined and already running, in Diablo 2 and the like they are generated and made as you enter the area.
Seriously, to even compare Diablo 2 and EQ/WoW/UO makes you look like a fool... Every person who has played a MMORPG for a long time can tell you that they are VERY different in gameplay...
I don't know about you but I enjoy fighting along side 20+ people (in EQ it can reach in the hundreds) not 8 or so like in D2/GWs (whats GW's max per mission zone? 10? pfft). Over 100 in a single area is much more immersive then 10...

And how do you know Guild Wars will not have similiar examples? Do you know everything about the game even though it isn't released? Maybe GW will have unique high level content. You don't know do you.. no.
A few high level mobs and EQ is a true mmorpg? Please..
99% of the game respawns and resets. Stays dead for a week? Still comes back, still not TRUE MMORPG (in your definition).
One dead mob is highly a changed world. That's just a tiny piece. There aren't enough examples of this to claim that the world is changed.
I'm not arguing for the sake of D2, I'm arguing for the sake that GW is more like EQ/DAoC/UO/WoW than D2.
You keep saying you love fighting a mob with 20+ people. Well that's fine. I like it too, but I don't like being restricted to this. I prefer 20 vs 20. You know, 20 people who you DON'T KNOW what they're going to do.
That's where the difference lies. I've seen it 100 times. In EQ, DAoC, whatever you have some group that kills high level content ONCE and they go on boards and make guides. The next group comes along and follows the guide to kill the mob, they ALREADY know what the mob can do, and he'll follow the same AI ruotines because the first group wrote a guide to kill him.
When you have PvP you have something that requires true strategy. When you get 20 people vs 20 people, they're going to be doing different things, not the same exact thing all the time.
I know you'll be dying to cry "zerg" and how it requires no strategy... granted. I know it's really lame when you get squashed by 3x your number, but thats life. But generally you can get a fair match that in turn delivers true entertaining gameplay, rather than taking on the high level mob with 20+ people who already know how to win and what the mob will do.
The only thing GW does is eliminate the plaguing factors of other games. How can you say negative things about GW, saying you can't interact with other people enough, when you in turn say "oh I like EQ because people can't touch me". In GW there is no waiting for a mob to spawn, no crowding important areas, no stealing kills and loot. All of these elements are eliminated, and the gameplay is retained. But you are not restricted to this, there are open areas of the world as well.
EQ limits what you can do (and EQ2 as far as I can tell) which is why I disagree with it. If you like a limited world, that's your business, but trying to spread the gospel that games like EQ offer so much more, that's just bull, because it doesn't.
Oh yah, I played UO for 5 years and DAoC for 1. I bet I don't know what an MMORPG is...
