http://www.destructoid.com/turok-and-turok-2-are-being-re-released-for-pc-307957.phtml

Quote:
Beyond that legacy they were actually fun little shooters, and now both Turok and Turok 2: Seeds of Evil are being re-released for PC by Night Dive Studios. They will be sold through Steam, the Humble store, GOG, GG, Greenman Gaming, and through the developer's site.

No release date was given, but you can check out some screens in the gallery below.

Kaiser (developer of PC ports of eg Doom64 and PowerSlave EX) was working on reverse engineering Turok and he has worked with NDS on Strife before, so I assume this is his work, but I don't know for sure..

This is what he said about it a couple of years ago: https://doom64ex.wordpress.com/2013/03/01/some-non-doom64ex-related-news/

Quote:
For those who haven’t been keeping up, TurokEX is my next reverse-engineering project which aims to recreate the N64 game, Turok: Dinosaur Hunter (and eventually, the sequels). Unlike with Doom64EX, TurokEX will be using a new engine built from the ground up and also won’t be attempting to match the behaviors/mechanics of the game that accurately. The engine (Kex2) will support a Javascript interface which users can script many different aspects of the game. Most of these features that I am currently working on will also be brought over to Doom64EX eventually.

Quote:
I am aware of the PC version, in fact, most of the disassembly is based on the PC version. The reason why I am still doing this is because the original PC version was a pretty bad port on top of limited options and a horribly outdated directx renderer.

The goal of this is to recreate the game using a better engine more suited to modern hardware, support mods, and co-op games.

One of the first PC games I played, my dad really loved it and we played through it together. Very Happy

Turok 2 was awesome as well, especially the creative weapons. Very Happy

I seem to remember the Turok games being ground breaking with regards to graphics in some way? I do seem to remember buying a brand new graphic card to go in my old pentium PC.

I played the hell out of Turok 1 and 2 on the N64. Those screens are kind of disappointing, I had hoped they'd at least remove the fog which was only present in the game due to the console's limitations.

Wasn't a bad game, but back then I thought people were giving it too much credit.
So I don't really care for it, that being said... always good for the fans. I hope it will be a proper remaster and not the ones I sometimes get for my beloved games

Nice, that they actually remake the games.
Call me interested! Very Happy

Mostly the original N64 version.

Guys they are just cleaned up re-releases, not too different from the PC ports of Doom64 and PowerSlave EX. No new assets etc.

Graphically I know they made use of 3DFX but yeah probably more related to the N64 and somehow getting the game(s) to work with that hardware and limited cassette (?) storage space.

However Turok 2 also had pretty good AI for it's time and good variety of enemy types, different weapons some of which were quite unique and also physics effects.
(Enemies also react differently depending on where they are hit - different death animations as well and some depending on the weapon used - they can also flee and try to find reinforcements and work together.)

Large open level design as well although clumsy platforming (especially the first game.) plus very short draw distance but it ran pretty well from what I remember.

EDIT: Ah so it'll be like the Strife re-release then, essentially the same game but a much better engine for modern systems and various other enhancements even if it's not a full "HD" release or complete remake. Smile

First of, I didn't come up with the remaster word on my own, it's in the original article, presumably taken from the publisher.

I did correct you because Bob thought this was a remake and a remaster is more or less a clean up/enhancement of an existing product. That could include asset work (take Stranger's Wrath for example) or just code (take Half - Life: Source for example).

For now we do not know if this is indeed Kaiser's work but if it is then that's an accurate technical description.

You fucker, I was just going to mention that thing, it was so OP in Rage Wars, if you got a hold of it, it was game over for whoever got in your way.

Good news everyone! It's indeed Kaiser's work Very Happy

Quote:
Just in case you were wondering, yes I am still alive and yes this blog isn’t going anywhere (yet). That said, in non-Powerslave related news, Turok EX has finally been announced. I guess you could say this was why I’ve been very quiet the past few months.

Some old post by Kaiser talking about his work in progress on the port: https://doom64ex.wordpress.com/2014/05/18/status-on-version-2-6-and-turokex-updates/

Quote:
I’ve been spending a large chunk of time invested in getting TurokEX done and just realized just how complicated this project has become, but despite of this, I’ve been making a lot of progress. Some of the latest features I’ve worked on is enhancing the renderer and incorporating some modern rendering features such as motion blur, FXAA, bloom, and light scattering. Hopefully, I’ll figure out how to properly incorporate shadow maps and SSAO as well.

Granted the released screenshots in the link in the OP do not seem to have such graphical niceties (I think?) so maybe they have been scrapped.

Had completely missed this announcement! dem Turok games Me Gusta
So many good memories, it will be a great reason to play them again in all their old school glory. Very Happy

As long as the dinofog is gone, and they come with proper support that brings improvements without altering the style too much, I'm game. (Now do Trespasser next pl0x!)

Native 60 (or higher?) fps will be a nice advantage too.

As far as I know it was only this year that someone figured out how to play the original at 60 fps, and that is not trouble free: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1022896

The new releases should use custom/modified engines that don't have such issues.
