Yup, I had first installed it on my 5 year old 120GB ATA drive which has never had a single problem and after I had beaten blood money on normal, that drive would randomly click and cause windows to crash. So, I installed windows on my brand new 300 gig drive that I had gotten just a few weeks ago and installed blood money on that, figuring it was just the other HDD's time to go. Sure enough, shortly after I beat the game on the next difficulty down, that drive began randomly clicking and give me a BSOD and crash. Formats did not affect either drive, as they'll both do the whole click & crash thing now at random times even after a reinstallation of windows. I just lost about $200 in drives due to that game.

It's entirely possible that the asr loader didn't like my nforce IDE drivers and caused disk errors.

I don't know what else it could be. After the first drive failed, I unplugged it from the powersupply and the motherboard, and then reinstalled ONLY windows and blood money off the image I backed up. Blood money and the DX9 it came packaged with were the only things I installed, and that drive failed shortly after as well.

I would have laughed at this like most of you if something similar didnt happen to me.

So I installed Tycoon City NY, mounted clone and played fine. The next day, after playing for extensive ammount of time I exited the game, and right after that pc goes all slow, one of hdds, my 200 gigger, which had clone on it that have I mounted to play the game, started making weird noises and barely working which lead to lockup.

So I thought "FUCK, I just lost 200 gigger". But after reboot everything was back to normal. So I thought "Oh well, was just some random bullshit" and continued with the game. Afer another extensive Tycoon City NY gaming I exited and same exact shit started to happen, terrible HDD sounds like it was dieing, slowly stopped to respond and eventually lockup.

Uninstalled the game and not gonna touch it ever again. Didn't have any problems like that with that particular HDD or any other nor did I have problemd with any games since then.

Freak coincidence? X-files? Bad weather? You tell me.

So what should it be instead then? Maybe some new undetectable copy protection that only happens to a handful of people all over the world? Razz

If this happened more often, there'd be a lot more talk about it all over the usual places. Heck, even the big news sites would surely report about such a story (remember the SF "rumors").

Every HDD has movable parts which can cause noises. It all depends on where on the HDD the files are stored, how old it is, and yes, even the weather has an influence. Heat and moisture are known to be hardware killers, a dusty environment could be a factor...

That a game itself is responsible for such a behaviour is hard to believe. Like I said, if that were the case, there'd be a lot more users having similar problems. But as this isn't the case, I'm sticking with my "freak coincidence".

WOAHH, had the same problem now.

When you walk along with the baking soda and are being checked by that gangster in the first level, suddenly when that gangster raises that stick to check me, my PC restarts and now comes the best "BOOT DISK FAILURE". I got lucky that I could repair my system with the Windows CHKDSK-function.

So it must be the game cos I didnt have that one before with any other game.

Sorry but I have to correct my comment above.

The CHKDSK-function worked only with Windows-CD in drive but not without, but strangely setting back the BIOS settings to default helped to get rid of the "DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER" error message and...
...my systems works again without any necessary reformat.

So what I am gonna do now: I AM gonna try the game again and if the error happens again I'll dump it in the trashcan.

BTW I am playing the game with 1.1 patch and the NoDVDCrack from G*mecopyworld.com by MMDox for the same version (which curiously now ain't available there any more, but I just found it on Megag*mes.com where it says that it has been posted by "Eidos").
Thx in advance for any help on that issue.

Wasn't it that crack that was for the demo patch and not for the full game? I think it was and it made the game crash, savegames get lost....?

try with 1.0 or use mini-image...

I played HBM patched to 1.1 with the reloaded .exe and played fine up to a point - in "You better watch out" the minute I layed down the Sniper briefcase or tried to set up a bomb, the game exited to desktop with no errors. So, the point is that if you patched the game to 1.1 and use anything else than the original exe - there's gonna be trouble. Maybe my system took it well, and not give me a serious error - like some people here.

But if you're having HDD trouble, be sure to change your ATA cable - I could fill up a page of what mess did to me one faulty ATA cable. And the first simptoms were disk boot failures and disk read errors.

Finally I found the solution to that HDD crash problem.

It was the exe-file from the demo that caused that crash. Fortunately I could get my system back to work. BUT don't use the exe if want to avoid any problems.

If u wanna play the game with version 1.1 just use a mini-image and securom loader. That worked for me 100%

Thx for all your help!
