So it seems the race with Sony - finding new exploits as the Playstation Portable's firmware gets updated - may soon be over for good: The first PSP modchip, Undiluted Platinum, will soon arrive, acting as a flash replacement. According to the manufacturer, it will now be possible to use older or even custom firmwares!

The chip has been designed to fit entirely inside the Playstation Portable. Unsigned homebrew code will run even on the latest PSP systems!

all im saying is you cant take pspu seriously for 'news' because they literally post every piece of bs that shows up... them saying 'we cant guarantee this...' is irrelivant, because EVERYTHING on their site can not be 100% guaranteed...

lets not forget, this is the second 'psp mod chip' rumor thats gone around... im NOT saying this is bs, but we surely remember how real that last mod chip turned out to be...

Yea it sure is tiny. I don't think we're at the stage where you can release something like this. Of course i'm not sure how it works technically but I think sony has too much control to change the way it works so easily.

Forced updates suck too. I think a small patch ala a new direct x version would be better rather than a complete overhaul.

hmm maybe they choose a dual boot solution? Where you will be able to boot a custom firmware and the official firmware seperately.

100? Fuck that. They should release it for as cheap as it needs to be, or make a 'how to' guide so ppl can make their own, and then accept donations like a passme.

wait and see if its really real before worrying about the price...

personally id love nothing more to be able to play isos on 1.5 AND buy the latest psp games that are worth the money and have them run no problem... this little device, if real, would be hugely beneficial to sony

heres hoping the stupid smackheads dont try to make it illegal... i dont think they have any foot left to shoot themselves in, to be honest...

at $90 and the risk of fitting it, I think I would rather put the extra $90 towards it and buy another PSP so I have a 1.5 PSP and a latest Version PSP... That way I know I will Still have a working 1.5 at the end of it and I know my latest version psp will be future proof for updates in the future (Eg Sony might block the Chip from booting in a future update etc)

But alll we have now is 2 pics and some details, not realy hard evidence that it even exists Wink

Modchips are only illegal if they are sold with illegal bioses/firmware installed.

Well in the UK and most of europe it has been illegal to install a modchip into a PS2 for a few years.

Does this PSP modchip infringe on Sony's copyright? As far as we're aware, at the moment it only allows for use of earlier unmodified firmwares. Is this classed as circumventing protection to infringe on copyright?

It's not illegal to install more hardware onto what you already have, hence, modchips are technically legal. Just not when they have stuffs just for piracy and such. Note that this isn't the latter, as it doesn't actually *do* anything, and requires you to flash it yourself.

Exactly.

I have seen some sites taking pre-orders now. I hope this comes in time for Tekken.

This device will be a huge benifit to the PSP scene. Hence more people can attempt risky firmware mods etc, without the risk of bricking.

And it will also help people unbrick there PSPs.

Cant wait.
