What is your preference when it comes to getting rid of those jagged edges in video games. I tend to choose higher resolution over AA.

Well.... AA is great. But higher res is better if your graphics card can handle it. I tend to go for AA as I can't stand jaggies. ><

I prefer aa over hi-res. Even 2x helps a lot.
(I play @ 1024x768 @ 100Hz - 17" crt here)
But sometimes I have different dilema - hdr or aa ?

I run all games at 1280x1024 + AA. However, if I had something like a 24" LCD, I would only be running in a high-def res.

For me: if performance is ok - hdr on, if not - aa on

Yeah, but if I would be an ATI user - it wouldn't mean I have x1xxx card...

I usually don't go higher than 1024x768 in some games, and 1280x1024 in other.
And AA the times my computer can handle it.
And when the choice is AA or HRD, then it's AA.
HDR looks so ugly.
I hate you.

I use 1280x1024 standard, since my monitor only supports it. (TFT LCD). And if needed, I go for 2x-4x AA with 16x ansi

i'd rather play 1280x1024 than have AA. The only games I can think of that I played with AA on was Max Payne 2 and Hitman 2. I hate when these bastard games dont support 1280x1024. Part of me died playing fallout on my lcd monitor

yucky yuck yuckiness, 1280x1024 is not real 4:3, you watch at streched image.

I don't understand people who talk about 'jaggies'?? do you have a shitty monitor or something because I never see them and putting AA on the higest setting is negligble for me (except in terms of performance)? Games are generally so fast paced I prefer the FPS increase.
The only place I noticed AA making a difference was on HL2 with blades of grass. But if you've actually played HL2 you'll know that it makes no frikkin difference.
Ghost Recon 3 advanced Warfighter however is a blocky mess of a game that could have done with AA, or at the very least a proper engine that wasn't so blocky in the first place.

No, my image is not stretched. 17" and 19" LCDs all have a native resolution of 1280x1024. Are you stuck with an old CRT or what?

How is it stretched? It's a linear increase from 1024x768?

If you are using a CRT monitor, a proper resolution would be 1280x960, not 1280x1024. Just thought it would be commong knowledge by now.

1280x1024 is not 4:3 but actually 5:4 there is a small difference.
/me hugs his 20.1in viewsonic that is 16:10 w00t to playing games at 1680x1050.

If it wasn't stretched it would be 1280x960. At 1280x1024 the image is stretched from 4:3 to 5:4, and most games don't bother correcting the aspect ratio. Not something easily noticable, but the person at IBM responsible for creating the resolution ~15 years ago should've been smacked upside the head for being a dumbass.

No, but it's the proper aspect ratio. A shape of an object looks exactly the same on a CRT at 1280x960 as it does on an LCD at 1280x1024. Hence why 1280x1024 on LCDs are not stretched at all.

1600x1200 FTW! I play all games in it and when I feel its needed I add 2xAA if my PC manages to handle it. HDR whenever I can too ofcourse!

I use a default resolution of 1280 x 1024 on my old 19" CRT and for games I use 1280 x 960 if they are not graphics intensive and 1024 x 768 if they are. Also I always have AA at 4x either through the game settings or through the control panel. Frankly I dont care for eye candy as long as it is good to look at

i never run a game higher than 1024x768, only reason is that it starts hurting my eyes and gives me a terrible headache after a while when i choose 1280x960. and 1024 looks good enough for me, so i vote for AA over resolution...

So is 800 by 600 with 4 x AA is better than 1280 by 1024 with no AA?

AA ofcourse, it's simply just more benificial than a higher res.. 1024x768 4xAA or 1280x1024 2xAA would be my first choice depending on fps ofcourse..

i think a lot of you are confused about what AA does. it doesnt make the jaggies go away it just makes em smaller. theyre still there. that being said i would rather just increase my resolution than suffer the performance hit of using 6x AA.
also 1280x1024 isnt a stretch dont you fucking see those black bars at the top and bottom of your screen on the LCD? maybe your monitor is too cheap and it doesnt add the bars. sorry to hear that.

You need to be more critical where you get your information from.
This is a load of bullcrap. If you draw a cricle on an LCD monitor which has a native resolution of 1280x1024 it is still a circle! This goes for both games and Windows.
