Some more details from AG.ru news post. They asked a couple of questions to community manager and project director at gamescom.
- The key of the project is to transfer original game into 3D keeping isometric view, familiar levels, game mechanics and atmosphere intact.
- This is possible as bitComposer Games owns original game source code and related materials
- At this moment the only other new features are: tutorial system, new GUI(screens have just quick-hack of the GUI), improved sound effects and re-recorded speech. Also game will feature a new psychological create-a-character test.
- Remake will contain characters and funny dialogs from original game
- Project is at very early stage of development, active development started only a couple of months ago.
EDIT: missed this bit
- It's unknown whatever sci-fi gameplay mode(aliens in the mines) will make it to the remake.

I'm pleasantly surprised it's not a TPS being released for 360.

Alarm bells just went off on this bit. If they re-record any of the AWESOME dialogue voice-acted by some of the best talent in the biz, no way it can hold a candle. It was and is the added personality in the game that gave it that extra special quality that made it classic and not just a really good strategy game for its time.
Also, like Mulder, I want to believe... It just is made very very difficult by the many mangled attempts at resurrecting the series in the past dozen years or so.

Id love to see it but seeing as its based on 2 it just goes to show that no one can make a true sequel. The gaming industry really is in a sorry state these days. Can't even produce a true or worthy sequel and when the do its either dumbed down clone or a game with the same name but something totally different from what it was.
One thing JA 2 does need is the ability to see the gear you wear on your troops like 7.62 did.Things like helmets and such.7.62 had so much going for it but the story was broken and it didn't have the good turn based mechanics or good story the JA series had.Was very buggy.

This seems like a waste of resources to me.
JA2 was so good, why not just leave it alone and make a sequel instead?
I really hope you can move the camera freely around, it looks so small from such a zoomed out view for me.
It's like the developers don't know what to do to make a new good JA game so they just remake the last one instead.

The Sir-Tech people could have done it, but they are all lost to us now.

God am I so sick of hearing how games need to be designed or raped to fit todays generation. There is NO SUCH THING.Thats why the majority of these new titles flop. These idiots are so out of touch with gamers.I see a lot of people that had no experience with the original xcom, fallout or JA games flock to these oldies because they are so good.It just goes to show that after all these years what makes a game good isnt state of the art graphics,,or any of that. Its game play which translates to fun factor!

ja2 was opensourced
oh, btw.. if you're planning on replaying the game, make sure you get the community developed latest build
they've fixed a lot of crap in the original that made it unplayable for me, such as forced turn-based mode
it was a game ruining experience when there was a slight pause in gunfire and it went realtime and a man came around the corner and shot me in the face

Think he means the other way around. That you in the new community mod can force turn based mode.

Not that it will happen, but they really should incorporate all the improvements/additions from the 1.13 unofficial patch. It's just so much better in every way that going back to the 'vanilla' version, even with graphical improvements, will feel just lame.

Yeah, the 1.13 u-patch is really so awesome that I've replayed it a couple of times already and would hate to go back to vanilla.

I suggest playing it on novice in that case, or at least install the 1.13 u-patch which makes the game MUCH better. ^_^
If you also play with the 1.13 you should pick tons of guns to have all the ace weapons.
