Wow cool! I am definately going to have to give this a try.
Nice find!
Best part:
Quote: | Do I need a modified Playstation 2 in order to use HDLoader?
No - HDLoader is provided as a pressed, bootable Playstation 2 disc. No modifications are required. |

Modchip or not - it'll save you scratching up disks by accident (Aka little brothers and sisters).
I'm just wondering if we'll be able to copy backups to the HD. Will see when its released I guess.
Also, theres PAL and NTSC versions, both on sale on divineo.

Anyone know if you can transfer software from PC to the PS2 HD with this? The website only claims it can make images off Disc's... no mention of PC to PS2 network capabilities like the Xbox.

Seen it floating around the web, Anyone know if it works? IGN has a write up about it and they state that it cuts the load times of games by 50%+...

From gamefreax.de - always a good adress for console stuff:
Quote: | The very popular HDLoader CD got released in USA some days ago. As the makers are deeply involved into the Scene they asked all big groups to keep their hands off it and most of them did. Anyway the guys over at ps2ownz gave a middlefinger and worked hard to get rid of the 20 protections. Today they released a working ISO of HDLoader which is just 8MB of size. The original CloneCD-Image is sized 500MB meaning there was a lot of crap on the CD that was necessary for all the protections.
Today is also the day of release of HDLoader PAL. People with a modded PS2 and the knowledge where to search perhaps won't buy it anymore but if you didn't modify your PS2 yet then ofcourse the HDLoader is for sure worth the buy.
However this is what people have to learn while always working against the industry they can't make a commercial software and hope not to be cracked... |
Have phun!

Don't you need a modchip to run this disk if you don't buy it?

yes because of the way playstation (1 and 2) copy protection works.
all they have removed is the Programs protection (you have to patch loads of PSX games anyways)
Playstation protection (I doubt very much) will ever be passable without doing crap like Swap disk's / Modchips etc...

So if you have modded your PS2 to play this disc, why would you need it? with a mod you could just run other games....
I'm not really seeing the point of this thing :\

I'm having trouble with the HDLoader...I can backup originals just fine. The problem is, I can't backup backups of games onto the hard drive (DVD-R backups). It gives me the error of "insert a valid ps2 cd/dvd". Is this normal for it not to be able to backup DVD-R's? Or what?

Do you have a modchip? You need a mod-chip for it to read DVD-Rs. Also, if it read them before, are these the same type?

Grrrrrrrrrrrr.......can't get it to work. Can anyone suggest anything ? (Apart from throwing my PS2 out the window)
On both the 8mb version of HDLoader, and the 130mb version......
I have tried a Maxtor 120gb drive - freezes at format screen.
Tried a Hitachi DeskStar 120gb drive - freezes at format screen.
I read on hdloader.com that there is an issue with some older network adaptors being incompatible with some HDs, so I swapped mine out with a new one. Freezes at format screen.
I have used the dm3 tool, and can see the formatted drive successfully, can remove the format, and re-format all OK. Still, when I try and format the bloody thing again, guess what ? It freezes at the format screen.
HEEEEEELP !!

For those of you that are having the same problem (possibly nobody judging by the number of replies !!!!) I have found the solution.
When you first boot the HDLoader, if you get the freeze, you have to wait for the HD to be accessed (shown by the little light flashing inside the PS2), then wait for the disc to stop spinning. If you eject the disc at this point, then....HEY PRESTO ! You get the terms and conditions screen. If you put the disc back in now, then press YES, the software continues as normal !!! WAHOO !!!

Nah, I had the laser replaced a few months ago. It plays all discs fine, it just hung on the hdloader screen. I think it is a known problem, as I found it on a website to do with chip compatibility & hdloader. Very odd though !
