Sad to say, but I think this one's going to suck. I just can't see how it could succesfully translate to 3D, especially not with the screenshots I've seen so far.

Screenshots look crap. Can't believe they didn't stick with the '2D' approach which gave the game a unique and artistic look. The game looks cheap, tacky and generic now and it also looks rather less natural.

It's sad that they turned it into 3D. Paradox games are best done in 2D imho. Hopefully this will be the only one using such an engine.

No, it now means we need it to be in 3D with special effects in order for it to look like it's a modern videogame worthy of attention and purchase... Even if it robs the game of atmosphere and any artistry in the process.

The original Total War games map was a realistic abstraction that was great for atmosphere as it actually represented the map in the shoguns room. The new map for total war lacks the artistic value of the original and adds nothing that couldn't have been implemented in the previous map styling. Furthermore because of it's godlike status in showing you everything and in a gamey manner (moving troops and so on) it lacks the atmospheric quality of the original games.

In the original the strategy map was ME the SHOGUN in the room you see in the intros. In Rome Total War there is more of a disconnect between the strategy and the battle modes.

I don't really care about the graphics. This game is all about gameplay to me.

I'm hoping for a release soon.

So if the game was actually displayed in an ASCII overlay you wouldn't care? Interesting Wink

Of course you're right that gameplay comes first but graphics can be an obstacle for that.

Yeah, 'cause EU has always been about graphics, right? Rolling Eyes
Fuck the graphics, why care about that in a game like this?

Game is out in some territories, as well the dl version, so it should be here soon.

It's not so much that bad graphics will ruin such a game, but that the fraphics look worse than the 2d graphics of EUII! Add to that the inevitable Paradox buggy initial release and it may be a disappointment.

If the game was good, then no I wouldn't care. I am a graphic whore in FPS's but in games like this, I don't really care.

You missed my point. I'm not talking about games specifically designed for ASCII type display, I'm talking about the real time conversion of the graphical output of a game like Europa into ASCII. I'm talking about how graphics can be distorted to have a negative impact on the experience & your interface with the game. How this can impact gameplay as a result.
