Wargroove is a turn-based strategy game for up to 4 players, in which each player takes control of an army and its commander unit to wage war on their enemies! Wargroove is extremely easy to pickup, with accessibility at the forefront of its design, and very difficult to master, with deep gameplay mechanics that complement strategic play.

Features
  • Choose from one of 12+ groovy commanders from the 4 warring factions, unlocked as you progress through Story Mode
  • Each commander has a lengthy campaign of their own, exploring their motivations and personality
  • Local and online multiplayer skirmish modea with complete rule customization
  • Local and online competitive and co-op play
  • Easy to use in-game map and campaign editors
  • Beautiful high resolution pixel art battle scenes and charming aesthetic
  • Starbound's Floran race reappears as a playable faction!
  • A number of new to the genre gameplay features TBA at a later date

History
Wargroove is a modern take on the simple yet deep turn-based tactical gameplay popularised in the 2000s by handheld games such as Advance Wars. As big fans of those games we were disappointed to find that nothing in this genre was available on current generation platforms and set out to fill the gap ourselves. Wargroove aims to recreate the charm and accessibility of the titles that inspired it whilst bringing modern technology into the formula. This modern focus allows for higher resolution pixel art, robust online play and deep modding capability, ultimately creating the most complete experience for Advance Wars and TBS fans.

Speaking with PCGamesN at ID@Xbox - an event for Microsoft's indie label - Chucklefish designer and artist, Jay Baylis, revealed the team are aiming for release in the second half of this year.

“It’s taken some time, we really want it to be a huge package.” Baylis says. “If it stands alone in a robust package then people appreciate that even if the art seems retro and simplistic. Also I think [fans] appreciate the kind of games we make because they know a Chucklefish game is something which has a lot of content and a lot of value.”

And it seems Wargroove will be quite the package. We already know the game will include 12 will fully moddable campaigns with branching paths, and the option to edit or create your own campaigns. But will the campaign editor be simple to use?

“Yeah, hopefully,” Baylis says. “You just paint on the tiles - like draw it on - drop the little units down, launch that, and send it to your friends. It can be as simple or complex as you want it to be.”

For those who want to create a fully-fledged campaign story, you can play with the game’s more complex editorial tools.

“On launch we'll have a cutscene editor, where you can direct cutscenes, and an animation editor with dialogue and emotes and stuff,” Baylis continues. “But you don't have to do that, you can just map a map and send it to your friends.”

The game is great. Picked it up from Voidu for $16. Well worth the money. If you are a fan of turn-based strategy games like Avance Wars, pick this up, you won't be disappointed. I really hope it does well and we see more games like this, preferably with better graphics.

If you like the genre and want to avoid the SJW-ness and pixel graphics of Wargroove i can highly recommend Battle of Wesnoth (which is free), really great game.
