So, I just saw the recommend me a book thread in the UV again and I figured 'why not make something similar for games?'.
Which is sort of fitting since I am looking for a game to play right now since for the next couple of weeks I got a lot of free time on my hands.

What I am looking for:
A easy to learn, fun, 4x game (preferrably set in space so no Civ 4 and please don't recommend Alpha Centauri. Back in the day I played that one to death - and it's not really space, is it?)

Basically I want a game that sort of takes me by the hand since I'm really out of practice concerning 4x games in general.
Most games I tried in recent history felt as if they just throw you into the water and expect you to be able to recite Milton's Lost Paradise and figure out how to swim at the same time.
Well folks, recommend away.

edit:

I sort of planned this to be a

This should fit the bill - Distant Worlds, it's pretty recent as well
http://www.nfohump.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=58293

Tho if you ever want something else than space-based, Rise of Mankind mod (with the A New Dawn modmod) for Civ 4 is pure awesome - regular Civ feels like kids' game after it.

Sword of the Stars

This.

Great, great game.

I'd also recommend the ACM mod:

http://www.kerberos-productions.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=6835

New models for every human ships (the original ones look kinda silly to me), many new weapons/techs and make games last much longer.

1st. Thanks for people actually recommending useful stuff.

I think I'll give Distant Worlds a go first, then Sword of the Stars since Epsilon recommended it and he's a guy you can trust on these things Very Happy

should I grab the expansions for Sword of the Stars as well or stay with the core game for the beginning?

I have to admit Distant worlds seems pretty decent.. I've played it for maybe 30 minutes on a 700 star world.
But fucked if I can find something to do in it.

Automation has gone too goddamn far, the AI seems to be able to do everything i'm able to; so i'm wondering what I should actually do. I'm worried if I turn off automation my civilisation will fall behind the rest of the universe hahah.

Quite like the interface, spritework and realtime approach. It's a pretty neat package.. I'd say the AI is really good aswell. (if the automation is anything to go by!)

Played around in it for about 30~ish minutes and I really don't like the interface :/
Gonna have another go at it after lunch though.

Welcome back to 4x!.. is all I can offer there Laughing

Sins is probably the easiest 4x (and prettiest) to get into if you're having difficulty.. it kinda flew over my head though.. I could just not enjoy it. Everyone else seems to though.

So after playing around a bit more in Distant Worlds I just can't get to like the interface.
So I tried Sins of a Solar Empire. Didn't play too much of it while I actually like the setting, ui etc. the real time part of the game puts me off.
Then (for the heck of it) I tried GalCiv 2.
I hereby declare that I absolutely suck at space 4x games and I apparently know jack shit about how to play them anymore.
Never thought you could revert to being a noob in something :/

Sword of The Stars is for you then. 4x noobs can pick it up and play just fine.

Just grab the game, all the expansions, latest update and then the mod. It's worth it, great game.

I have just reinstalled Empire Earth 2, 'cause I love it. And also, because I don't really know of a newer game that is not all about 1 hour tank battles (I'm thinking of the more recent C&C games now). I enjoy the micro-managing and base-building that EE2 brings, and that it's not all about who can build the largest tank farm in the shortest ammount of time.

Oh and I almost only play skirmish-matches

Watercooled 5950X | AORUS Master X570 | Asus RTX 3090 TUF Gaming OC | 64Gb RAM | 1Tb 970 Evo Plus + 2Tb 660p | etc etc

I just upgraded my CPU from a Athlon x2 2.2 GhZ to a Phenom II x4 3.2 GHz
Together with my Radeon HD 5770 I think I should be able to play games that are a bit more demanding now.
Problem?
I can't think of any.
Recommend me some recent games that probably wouldn't have ran on my old system (and therefore I didn't bother and/or care about them) but should run fine now.

But Witcher 2 could be interesting. Do I need to have finished The Witcher in order to understand TW2?
