okay, here is the deal:

a friend of mine got a huge house and rented a few rooms to chinese students here, and one of them keeps downloading chinese tv shows of the net, which resulted in a few phonecalls from shaw (cable company), that he is exceeding his bandwidth. he has a limit of 60gb a month i think. he talked to him about it but he keeps leeching like crazy.

so i found a program (softperfect bandwidth manager) with which he can set a limit (daily, weekly or monthly) and if he exceeds it, the speed will throttle down. but the problem is, that the program has to be installed on the other computers as well to work, which is not an option he said (he doesnt want to start some bad vibes or something).
he hasnt set up a home network, everything just runs through routers and he wants to limit his bandwidth, or just slow him down whenever he wants to. he wouldnt mind to check his current bandwidth usage and then slow him down manually. anyone know of a program which can do that, without installing it on the other computers? TIA

He should setup a computer in between the modem and the router.. problem solved Very Happy

Oh, but use a dedicated firewall OS like Monowall.. will provide better results.. Not sure which do the best bandwidth limiting though, you should check for yourself

he would need a second ethernet card in his computer then right? modem goies directly into his, and the router gets the internet service from the second ethernet card...? im not THAT familiar with routers Wink

Thats the deal, you basicly set your PC up as a router which routes all the traffic from the modem to the router... making bandwidth changes on the way. I would suggest you get an old 486 to do the job though, it doesnt need to be a powerful machine assuming you are going to use a linux distro for it.. there are loads out there which once installed can be setup using a web interface.. easy Very Happy

that would take more time than i have Very Happy and he doesnt want to spend any more money...isnt it possible to control one of the 2 routers he has in any way? he has a wired one which is next to his computer with the modem, and a wireless one somewhere else in the house. both are linksys. the wireless is the wrt54g afaik, forgot the model number of his wired one...

The problem with most routers is the lack of useful features provided by the normal firmware.. Some routers support custom firmware created by the open source community, depends on the model of router.. If I recall Linksys routers are pretty good for this, my netgear however is not, so I have never actually tried any of these Sad! A friend of mine has though (not sure which) and he says great things about his! Here are a few examples..

OpenWRT
http://openwrt.org/
Supported Hardware
http://wiki.openwrt.org/TableOfHardware#head-6b2369a6aabba3642915213936b680fdedcffe0d

Ok thats the only one I found.. I would suggest you get the make/model number and do some googling for custom firmwares.. Should you not want to do this then his PC would probably do the job, but it *may* slow down depending on network traffic, and of course you would have to use a Windows program, which is not the best way to go (and could very well just be utter rubish Razz)..

Oh, and your best off modifying the wired router, as I would guess the wireless plugs into this and only acts as an AP routing all traffic to the main wired router..

yeah i go over to his place in a bit, check the router custom firmware thing and if its a no-go i'll tell him to do the easiest thing. pull his plug if he ignores to slow down...he told him a few times already but he keeps leeching jing/jang shows...well thats what i'd do if i were him

Most of the internet providers here have some kind of cap, although I get around 300 gb per month, well above the cap of 60, and I've never heard anything from the cable co.

Its not that bad. But could still not live with that. The mainstream ISP here started with that, but they had it for like 1-2 months. I want to feel free! Very Happy Its a principle imo, i don't think the ISP loose so much (money?) without the cap either. Meh, ill live here ^^

I know some of those custom firmwares have lots of additional settings added. I am using a Linksys router (WRT54G) and recently d/l-ed one of those HyperWRT firmwares, working like a charm and lots of extra settings (also the possibility to restrict stuff, although I am not using it so not familiar with those settings).

HyperWRT forum: http://www.hyperwrt.org/forum/
Pose your question there, I'am sure those guys can help you choosing the right firmware. I read there is the possibility to schedule access/limit bandwidth for a certain period or time of day for instance

i had a look at the custom firmwares, but from what ive found out in the short time i had, barely any are compatible with the WRT54G v4 he has though. but the issue is solved for now, that guys laptop, who did all the leeching, crashed yesterday Very Happy
i wanted to block the ports for p2p, but my friend says he downloads his stuff through his browser. thanks for the replies anyways guys, appreciate it

well I think that if the chinese dude won't listen to what he says and commands he should be facing consequences. He is renting a room, renting something always gives rules to follow. If he doesn't follow them... Well cut the connection for him. Problem solved...

A little more serious though, lets say it comes down to something worse. Chinese dude starts smoking shit all day long in that rented room, when told to stop he doesn't. Police finds out and grabs him and bla bla. Set limits when there is still time.

If someone rented something from me and didn't follow the rules I would warn a few times and if they don't listen. Out with them. Go somewhere else if you don't obey, my stuff. I am taking your shit and I won't accept that.

As for ISP's with limits... A few have that here in sweden on certain connections but noone gets those. If it gets added onto the service they change ISP. Noone here accepts that!

yeah i told him that too. just talk to him and tell him to slow down one last time and if he keeps ignoring you, just pull the plug. problem solved Wink
here in canada bandwidth caps are pretty normal. i have a cap of 20gb Rolling Eyes but its only a "softcap" they dont really enforce it. i never exceed 100gb and never got a phonecall or letter/email, so thats fine with me, since i have an average of 60-70gb a month. all im leeching is games and music. movies i get from the local video store Very Happy
