depending on the deployment-plan the different versions all have their little advantages but dont differ much from each other (i either go with tight- or ultravnc)

If you have a java-enabled browser at your disposal you can login into your vnc-session anyways without a need for a client-side program afaik, so no need for a middle man.

Another solution could be using remote login of xp. You ll need xp pro for it though as the home version doesnt have it. Then just enable remote-login on your home-system and login from any xp pro you want. Its even somewhat better(e.g. a bit faster/ more stable /...) then vnc with xp in my experience

Indeed, but it logs out any user who is logged in locally to the pc, quitting all programs wich are not running as services.

You can try it yourself, the remote login will ask you if you want the local/other user to be logged out. If you say no the remote connection will close. And i've never heard of any solutions for this.

I've thought about VNC before, in the context of playing WoW or watching some movie I downloaded the night before on one of the loaner laptops that my school has. I'm not sure how viable that is though. If anyone can recommend a VNC client that can handle, say, WoW (don't worry about the connection speeds, my 10mbps can handle simultaneous connections, and the school's wireless is fast enough), it would be a viable option.

yeah vnc is cool , i got a vnc program on my psp and i use it to log on to my home pc from a wi-fi hotspot anywhere to check my downloads and stuff Very Happy
and its a lot better then a xp remote desktop as that logs the current user off whereas vnc dont, allthough thru the psp it can be a little slow , but its handy for a quick overview of what my pc is doing while im out and about

I hope you aren't hoping to play a game/watch a movie remotely through VNC. That just won't work man. 10Mbit is waaay to slow to handle the bandwidth required for something like that. You'd probably need a Gbit-connection, and a pretty fast CPU.

Remember that VNC basically sends imagedumps frame-by-frame, with a RAW-connection, a 1600x1200-image is about 5,4MB.

To have a smooth rendition of a movie, that would require your connection to send -at least- 24 of these per second = 24 x 5,4 = ~130MB/s - that would require -at least- a Gbit connection, it would also put your CPU at an immense strain.

Why this works with eg. a desktop screen, and simpler things (such as surfing), is because they've managed to program functions that work similarly to DTV, meaning - only what changes in the image is sent. In a rather static desktop environment, this makes it much speedier to use.

There are options, like JPEG-compression, and such - but none would enable you to play a game, or watch a movie through VNC on another computer.

Yes, yes I'm back.

Its really nice, because you can't block it. It uses port 80 i think. The teacher at my old school tried to block the program, but gave up Very Happy

i'll stick with logmein for now and maybe when school starts again i'll try to test vnc but i think my home IP will be blocked because the stupid admin checks the firewall logs.... another reason that i use logmein for the fact the data is encrypted to 256 bits but i hope vnc can support SSL connections so the URL is also encrypted

I still prefer VNC programs, which has much more features then Logmein. RDP is nice too, but not really suitable for all PC's.
