Science tells us that modern humans have been around for over 200,000 years, and recorded history to date goes back about 5,000 years or so. With all that experience behind us and five millennia of written accounts to ponder and take lessons from, one would think that we should have learned something more about cooperation and working together for a common good rather than engaging in an endless cycle of violence.
From both the written record and the archaeological evidence one would also think that we should have learned something more about environmental degradation and destructive social and economic practices.
As I read through the news reports each day it becomes apparent, unfortunately, that our enlightenment has fallen far short of what is possible from the lessons that have been put before us.
On the environmental front, economic greed and denial of the obvious remains out of control as we tear apart the intricate ecological system that we depend upon for our very existence. That the planet is warming is without doubt, bringing on changes that we can all see now with reasonable predictions of even more radical and upsetting changes in the future.
Yet, we cannot agree to take effective action because powerful interests prefer to make a few more dollars today rather than protect the welfare of future generations.
As a result of our failure to act, the seas are rising, plant and animal species are disappearing, and the quality of our air and water in many places has become seriously degraded. We are consuming the inheritance of our descendants. Scientists of some future century — assuming our race survives — will look back on us as a good example of what not to do. Whether they actually do anything about it or not is questionable since that part of our genetic makeup seems to be recessive.
On the political front, greed and violence runs amok unabated. Palestinians are killing Israelis for taking their land. Israelis are killing Palestinians, Lebanese and anyone else that gets in their line of fire because Palestinians are killing them. Iraqis are killing each other and Americans while Americans are killing Iraqis. Same story in Afghanistan with Afghans, except Canadians are in on the killing sprees too.
In doing research on the current horror in Lebanon I saw a particularly disturbing photo. It wasn't the one of the little Lebanese baby with the big shrapnel hole through its back, nor the mangled bodies of Lebanese on fire, or the young Lebanese girl with her face covered in blood.
It was of some young Israeli girls merrily painting messages on artillery shells that were supposedly being fired at the Lebanese. Death and destruction as child's play.
Speaking of death, more Canadians were killed and wounded in the Afghan mess last week. About 19 so far have had their lives terminally wasted there. CBC reported that a Canadian soldier referred to the attacks on Canadians as “cowardly.”
It makes you wonder what our soldiers are thinking. Perhaps someone should tell them they are in a war, not a video game. There are no such things as cowardly attacks, only successful attacks and failed attacks, and from the look of things we can expect more of the same.
Meanwhile, as our soldiers play hide-and-seek with the Taliban and assorted tribesmen to make Afghanistan a better place, the Afghan government introduced a plan to bring back the religious police. This no doubt will make life worse for a lot of Afghans, particularly women.
There has been much press about a successful operation against the Taliban with Canadians engaging in more than 35 firefights and killing over 100 enemy. Unfortunately in wars like the one in Afghanistan, tactical successes often do not add up to strategic victory. Think of it as successfully carrying buckets of water away from the beach in an attempt to drain the sea.
The Afghans can win this war against the occupying forces without ever winning a battle. All they have to do is never quit. What Canadians have to do is decide how much we are willing to spend in lives and resources on a long shot bet that they might.
Canada's military problems are minuscule compared to what the U.S. is facing. It seems now that every time one turns around there is another report about rapes and murders in Iraq. It has got to the point that the Iraqi puppet government has asked that the UN revoke the immunity of U.S. troops from prosecution by Iraqi authorities.
Part of the problem may be that in order to keep up enlistments, the U.S. Army has dropped its standards and is taking in those who a few years ago would have been undesirable. In response, it is reported that many of the best troops are quitting.
Environmental irresponsibility and war — what a nightmare, and all of it a waste of lives and resources. It isn't as if we haven't had these same issues over and over again in history to learn from. Why don't we? |

Anyway, it sad all the shit that goes on in this world. war, famin(sp?), poverty. All things which could be solved if ppl were more tolerant and understanding and willing to help their fellow man...
But, this world isnt about equality and unity and striving for something good.
Its about a few elite exploiting the ppl and the planet and living like kings...
I know it sounds lame, but you know what kinda society i would like to see? a society like star trek. No money, everyone has everything they could possibly need, a life of education and exploration and striving for bigger and better things.
And of course we'd all have to run around naked in this perfect society

As i said before if you want to save the world just kill every fucking living thing from bacteria to homosapiens and raise the nitrogen ratio in the air so none of the bodies will rot and none of the bacterias will evolve in 2-3 billion years and become humans.
So you can prevent idiot humans fighting for money , oil , land , religion.
You can prevent fuckers from photographing each other with koran and bomb.
You can prevent idiots from posting these pictures on the internet who tries to blame it on muslims.
You can prevent son of bitches from destroying train stations , towers , subways.
