I'm building a HR database for the company I'm freelancing for, obviously the easiest option is access (which is also something they would like) but I was wondering about how legit an access database is? Are there any licensing issues?

Is there an open source alternative? Maybe an application that makes better use of networked database access? Or maybe just an application someone can suggest/recommend?

I am also considering doing it from scratch and programing it all myself, or possibly doing a web based system..

Thoughts?

PostgreSQL is a pretty good open source database. Access is very easy to use but limited in the size of the database. If I remember right they only let you make databases around 2 gigs in size. So its not very scalable.

Good point that I didn't consider. I will have to do some tests to see exactly how much data we will need to be storing, from what I can gather it wont be anything like 2gb, but you never know, the company may want to use this database for years to come.

Also consider that Access has connection limitations. I.E. if lots of people want to access the database simultaneously, there will be performance issues that would have to be overcome with a SQL Server solution. That may not be a problem for you.

Generally, if it's a smaller database with only a few concurrent connections, Access is just fine. Also, you don't need MS Access to utilize Access databases. Robust web-based or desktop solutions can be created using Access databases with simple VB programming knowledge. Let us know what you picked.

Oh, I forgot to mention SQL Server 2005 Express, which is free and is a scaled-down version of SQL Server that is faster and more secure than a standard Access solution.
