for a fee this holiday season microsoft is taking an unprecidented step and allowing homebrew to be officially suppourted on their console. According to their Q&A it will start with game creation through their much touted and respected XNA development tools. Its gonna cost $99 for the 360 package the tools will be free for PC only development (its cross platform). Later they plan on adding suppourt for making applications and adding network code.

To me its a monumental step for software hobbiests and shows a point at which microsoft is willing to meet those of us who like to tinker with our consoles but would like to do it legally and still obtain the benefits of a live service. Yes it comes at a price but you have to admit its amazing that a console is finally going to be open for this kind of development and better yet have full support. what do you guys think?

I think it's great they're allowing it, but I'm sure they're going to goto some great lengths to try and keep people from running iso's.

Call it gut feeling, but for MS to take such a bold step means they have some plans in the horizon to prevent backups from running on the 360.

Yes, basically you send the code to MS and they compile it and sign it. Presumably they'll be checking it for potential wrong doings as well.

I think its a good idea in the long run but what with chips available now, its MS's way of damage control for the 360 perhaps?

for the homebrew it compiles then uses the network to transfer the files to your 360, you can share projects with anyone who has subscribed to the XNA kit, eventually there will be a channel for anyone to grab a game

all i know is potentially this could open up great doors for developers can you imagine half life 2 sdk for xbox360 it would be insane being able to make game mods and maps through developer supported XNA software, live would be unrivaled with this kind of content sharing
