|
 |
So, having played GTA IV for 9 hours or so and still not being able to drive for shit.
I am wondering whether to invest in a steering wheel. I have the Logitech MOMO in my sights, have read a review and they claim that playing a racing/driving game with the wheel is a whole new level of fun.
What do you guys with wheels have to say about this. How was GRID, and NFS etc, and how was GTA IV ?

I am not a big wheel fan but I found this about someone trying to play GTA 4 with a wheel
Link:http://www.gtplanet.net/forum/showthread.php?t=114707
Spoiler: | I liked this post, so I went ahead and tried it for you. I have a Driving force Pro, but yours should work too. GTA4 is pretty much unplayable with this wheel. On foot, there's no way to make Niko walk or run (Since the pad controls the radio stations and your cell phone), and turning the wheel makes him spin in place. So, I grabbed the controller and carjacked an old lady, then switched the DFP to controller slot 1. The pedals don't work, so that means you'll have to accelerate and brake using the X and [] buttons; the steering works... Which doens't sound too bad, if it wasn't because of the AWFUL dead spots. The dead spot is HUGE and turning the car around is real troublesome.
So, in a nutshell, to succesfully play GTA4 with a Driving Force Pro, you'd need to:
a) Use the in-game XMB to switch your Sixaxis controller to slot 1 everytime you get out of a car to control Niko and map the DFP to controller slot 1 every time you get on a car.
b) Get used to the button mapping of the game while in-car; there's no custom configuration for the game's controls, so your choices are to use X [] or L2 R2 for gas/brake.
c) Get used to the huge dead spot of the wheel. |
if it helps any.

Use breaks. It's not that hard really.

Apparently GTA4 doesn't even support steering wheels on the PC, so whilst I'd recommend the Logitech series of wheels the fact is based on the games you've mentioned you won't get any benefit. I have GRID and GTA on both the PC and PS3 and they are best played with gamepads, not steering wheels. If you turn down the rotation of the wheel then GRID is playable but it still feels counter-intuitive as the handling model is very arcade/actiony.
Also, if you want to play more realistic racing games on the PC then give the MOMO a miss as its pedals are guaranteed to eventually break. I've owned one in the past and it was great as my first wheel but after several attempts of fixing the pedals (before eventually throwing them across the room and watching them splinter into a thousand pieces) I bought a G25 and haven't looked back. If that's too expensive then get the driving force pro variants.
...but unless you play simulations you won't have any use for it so you're forewarned

I actually had a wheel borrowed from my friend for a week or so. It was horrible, I hated every moment of it, and I love driving games. Controller is a way to go.

So basically the wheel is only useful in a sim.
What are the most recent sims ?
Does DIRT count ?

DIRT and GRID are excellent with a steering wheel, as long as its not uber-arcadish like Pure or Trackmania a wheel surpasses every gamecontroller.

GTR2, Race07 + addons, rfactor, liveforspeed, Richardburnrally, all games who are desiged for a force feeback wheel, grid and dirt are crap with wheel, massive delay in steering and useless Forcefeedback.
