I ended up with a spare hard drive so though i would give ubuntu it's own disc instead of dual booting off 1 hard drive.
But every time i finsih install and reboot i get a 'error loading os' message.
Windows still boots fine on the other disc but i cant for the life of me get ubuntu to boot.

Well i got round that problem, had to change grub to use hda(0,0) as no matter how i installed it always set it to hda(2,0), looking on the net it seems a common probel with linux, would of though a solution would of appeared for it.
And i tried ,ubuntu, mepis, and yopper but all did the same.

You need grub installed on the mbr of the first disk your machine looks at
How is your bios set to detect the hard drives?
I have mine set to auto detection of both hda(winXP) and hdb (ubuntu)

Grubs a bit quirky though although its installed on mbr of hda if I remove hdb I cannot boot windows.

Hopefully sYn will be around to answer this.. Very Happy
