I've always been a fan of heavier, more agressive music, but as I listen more and understand music in general more I become more and more troubled.
Prior to high school I was into bands like Nirvana, Metallica, Soundgarden, Pantera, etc. When high school rolled around I was kind of bored of these bands and wanted something a little more interesting and very accessible and got into nu-metal (slipknot, mudvayne, etc.). When that whole scene got tiresome I moved my way onto more extreme forms of metal (Death, Thrash, Doom, Black, Grindcore, etc). I dont have to tell many of you that these genres/scenes are filled with duplicate bands and retarded fans. Around the time of high school graduation I got into metalcore, which in my opinion is one of the most difficult genres to define. At the time it was something very new that had a decent scene and incorporated some of my favorite things about extreme metal with out all of the necessity to be evil or stay 'true'. But since this genres emergence into popularity the scene has grown filled with piss poor bands and shitty fans.
The point is I feel that I have heard everything that metal can offer and every new band that comes to my attention in any one of these genres is similar if not the same to a band that came years before it. Nothing is new. I haven't seen a turely innovative band in a few years. You get the point, I'm fed up with the genre as a whole and am not very optomistic about metal's direction in the future. So here come's the question, where do you see metal being in the next 5 to 10 years?
Personally with the over-saturation of bands these days and the massive commercialization of the music industry metal seems to be meeting it's demise. I fear that if it does indeed live it will be another bastardized, puppet genre of the industry.
So what comes next? What genre will spark my attention in metal/heavy music again?
Spoiler: | Keep in mind that some bands and albums I will enjoy forever and this is not to say I am done listening to heavy music. I forever will consider myself a metal head and can' wait to play old Opeth cds for my children one day |

the problem that i have with most metal bands is that they cant stick to their original genre. every new cd gets less and less of their original greatness. i dont really like deaf and dark metal where you cant hear what words they are singing. yes im a word guy. i cant fully enjoy a song that i dont know the lyrics of (so i can sing along ).
the future for metal: more of the same , more new genres, more groups, more "underground" for true metal

yeah, I used to love 'conventional' metal (Pantera, Metallica, Slayer, etc.) in high school, but the whole nu-metal scene made me move on.. so I guess I found punk, and 20+ years of music to sink my teeth into.
Only recently have I gotten back into metal again, and it's mostly because of the whole metalcore scene, which seems to fit nicely somewhere between metal and punk. I'd agree with you as well that in quite a short time this scene has become filled with piss-poor imitations and retarded emos.
As for the future of metal, I have no fucking idea

Nice read there, and I definately agree.
Same here, i liked the nu-metal scene when it was new, hell I loved it. For the past maybe 4-5 years it has gone so predictable and boring, its just natural to move on from it to something new. And yes, same here, metalcore was the salvation, and I still today enjoy that genre, even though as you say, it´s very hard to define.
As for where the next big thing will be, I have no friggin´ clue. But i think originality is fading away slowly, there HAS to be a limit to how much you can experiment and still call it music. That sells.
On that note, have you heard the new Trivium-stuff? Or should I say, Trivitallica. They´re SOO close to cross the line between being influenced by, and copying Metallica.
And I´m sure you´ve heard the new Caliban CD, wich has songs that are blatantly copied from As I Lay Dying.

I hate most of the new metal that comes out to...and all the emo crap. It wouldnt be so bad if they didnt all sound the same. I mean, all one has to do is watch mtv (or muchloud for canadians) to see what I mean.
Its disgusting the way rock has gone.
I remember when rock was Nirvana and Pearl Jam and Alice in Chains and Soundgarden and Stone Temple Pilots etc
Now when you say 'rock'...people think of simple plan, afi, yellowcard etc...bands that have no substance and are pure commercial...
Rock actually used to make a statement..the statement has been lost.
Like Marilyn Manson said
"Rock, is deader than dead
The shock, is all in your head
Your sex and your dope, is all that were fed
so fuck all your protests and put em to bed"

Excellent. This may be my only salvation.
@JeanPerrier: I actually like when bands venture off and do something that doesnt fit their usual style. Progression is not possible without change.
@SiN: I haven't heard new trivium. I'll check it out sometime soon. As for Caliban, they've always reminded me of a cross between KSE and As I Lay Dying.
@Syco: It seems that actual rock being popular died when MTV stopped showing music videos. How good were the early 90's when before school I could turn on the television and catch an alice and chains video? Never again will this be possible.
Thanks for the replies everone.

i dont give a fuck about this pop-metal that comes out monthly. i stick to my old school metal, iron maiden, judas priest etc. everything that comes out and calls itself metal sounds all alike and too much like pop. its really laughable, any band that uses an electric guitar is considered metal nowadays....

well explore another music genre. listening to only one genre is like eating just beans every day. subgenres may give you some variation like baked beans or chili beans. but in the end its just all beans. eat potatoes for some time and eating beans now and then will taste delicious again.

Blame the fucking Black Label Society for that. They also shut down their PA sets and whatnot.

very true but I have always listened to genres other than metal. I really am a fan of music in general but it needs to be interesting to catch my ear. Noteable bands/artists that arent metal that I listen to: Beck, The New Amsterdams, Owen, American Football, dredg, Dakota Dakota, Russian Circles, The Spill Canvas, Tom Yorke, etc...
Stcking with the food theme... Metal, while not the only music I listen to, has been my bread and butter.
@ SiN : Fuck BLS. Zack Wylde is a twat.
