Sokal is probably most famous in the gaming community for the Syberia series of adventure titles which were thoughtful and artful adventure games set in a frozen landscape full of strange mechanical toys and steampunk philosophy. Paradise is far removed from Syberia in a lot of ways, most obviously the difference in climate.
Paradise begins and stays on the continent of Africa. A young woman awakens to find she has crashed in the desert only to be saved by an Arabian prince. She sets out on a journey to discover her identity and why the Arabian prince wants her to escort a black leopard to her home.
We had the chance to look at a very early version of the game and Sokal was along to offer insight into his inspiration for the story. Paradise is something that he had been thinking about and writing for around 10 years from start to finish and something close to his heart. He grew up in both Belgium and the Congo and has seen the face of Africa change since his childhood. Part of the fiction is the exploration of that change and the melding of childhood memories with adult realities, much like the journey the main character Anne Smith takes over the course of the game.
Africa also lends itself well to adventure, especially in the eyes of the Western world. Sokal pointed out that Africa was to Europe as the Wild West was to America when he was growing up in the 50s. It has that adventurous nature of man vs. nature vs. man's nature vs. nifty puzzles that makes for good story and games.
It also creates different artistic opportunities. One of these is a much warmer color palette than Syberia ever had thanks to the different climate. The happier colors belie a much greater tension gripping the fictional country of Maurania.
Paradise is a much darker story by design taking influence from Heart of Darkness, a trip most of us have taken in high school, to create a story about the journey of a woman and the love/hate relationship between a daughter and father. Much like that famous story, the farther players dig into it, the crazier it gets. There are a lot of parallels with the two works of fiction, though this one might be suited to a happier gameplay experience.
Like Syberia, Paradise will be a very story driven experience with plenty of traditional point and click adventure gameplay. The main character Anne Smith will be controlled by clicking on the ground in the environment while interaction with the environment is also only a click away. Simply dragging the mouse over any part of the environment that can be used will change the icon to something new.
As with most adventure games out on the market, environment and character are a major force in gameplay. Point and click adventures in particular are very puzzle centric, meaning there needs to be a great deal of interaction in an interesting way that's also integrated into the storyline. For instance, one puzzle brings Anne to a dark corner of the palace she's in with a set of keys to progress through the gate ahead, but it's too dark to see. Before she can move on, she'll need to find equipment to light a lamp by the gate in order to see where to use the keys.
One of the most interesting aspects of the game is its departure from the point and click norm when it comes to the black leopard Anne is charged with escorting home. When Anne goes to sleep, players will find themselves in control of the leopard in a real-time 3D environment.
Sokal was quick to point out that this doesn't mean the game will turn into an action platformer, but he's hoping it will break up the point-and-click adventure with a little different perspective. The more interesting opportunity here is for linked puzzles between the leopard and Anne. Completing a goal with the leopard might unlock something that will help Anne progress when she wakes.
While the view of the game was very short, it's clear that the production levels are easily on par with the Syberia series. Should the puzzles and story be up to the quality, it's like Paradise will be a great hit with the adventure community.

Dreamfall seems like a very poor attempt at cashing in on a great prequel (though I haven't actually played Dreamfall, it's just what I've gathered from reviews and what people have said about it), but this looks awesome.

Well Syberia was a realy good Adventure game, ok no action etc but a good puzzle adventure game with great backdrops and a compelling story. I have a vauge memory of Carnardo (beeing an 80s guy I read alot of "adult comics") My favourite comic book artist was always Enki Bilal.

yeah but all the ingame items you collect and menus are in Dutch. Its unplayable unless you can read dutch. Dialogue choices are also in Dutch which blows.
