As far as I know there are no mod chips available. Someone feel free to correct me if I am wrong about that or any of this.

What you need :
Xbox 360 console
PC with SATA connection
SATA Connectivity Kit
Firmware

There are two types of dvd-rom drives. Hitachi and Samsung. Check the design on the dvd-rom tray to determine which you have without dismantling the console.

Check this link to determine which type of drive you have.

SATA Connectivity Kit
http://www.kanection.co.uk/product.php/850/0/

You play downloaded games by flashing the dvd-rom firmware so it will read backed up dual layer dvd discs. The basic procedure is dismantle 360 console, remove dvd-rom drive and connect it to a PC via the SATA connector. You need to put the drive in mode B in order for Windows to see it. I have heard this can be awkward depending on your motherboard. There a few methods of doing this with several risks attached. I dont recommend either. Personally I would get the SATA connectivity kit to connect the dvd-rom to your PC. Each drive has its own type of firmware. Then you back up your original dvd-rom firmware so it can be restored if things don't work out for whatever reason! I believe there are some simple applications available for you to do that. Flash the drive with the appropriate firmware. Connect it back up to the 360 and test it. If it works put the console back together and job done!

You also need dual layer disks and a dual layer burner.

Just a FYI here, it costed me close to $200USD for a DVDR-DL burner, and $80USD for a pack of 50 DVDR-DL disks. Very expensive right now, and methinks you have to use "Verbatim" brand or else the drive won't read the disk right. (Someone care to verify?)

lol good point. Also not all burners work with the 360 images as far as I know. I had to buy a Pioneer 111D since my LiteOn wouldnt do the job!

Yep. Verbatims or Ritek. I use Ritek and havent had any problems whatsoever with them.

Decent DL burners are no more than 60 bucks though. It doesnt have to be a Pioneer but preferably so.

bit of a risk buying the 360 and modding it now since the update for the dash is expected around the 17th of Nov which could potentially shitlist your console.

Is that definitely happening? I mean what if Microsoft are unable to release an update that can detect modified firmware?

testing for hacked firmware is easy a 10 second dump and checksum test. Thats about the best thy can do or simply add an extra disk check ~17th of nov we'll find out for sure when we see the slew of WTF!?! i'm banned posts. And for those thinking to just hide from xbl the update is going to come as a mandatory update on newer games, so unless a workaround comes first you wont be playing any new games if you want to play on line. And if the update diables the flaw altogether (which i doubt. They'll do a dvd drive HW revision like they did with the ms28 FW but more hardcore) then you prolly wont be playing any backups whatsoever.

for the checksum thing you should get the fw stealth patch thingy.. its supposed to send the original firmware data instead of your hacked one.

do you really need a connectivity kit?
I thought you only need that to get the drive to ModeB so you can use it in windows to make backups yourself. Do you still need to do that if you just download pre-patched backups?

While some of that is true some of it is total nonsense They cannot make newer games have a mandatory update before playing them dont be so daft, what about people with no internet connection, they cant do that. I dont play on live, I prefer pc online gaming, fps with a pad (pukes into a bucket) once they update you can bet your backside they will release a new firmware to evade it. I sacrificed XBL but for the sacrifice I get thousands of dollars worth of games for free.

The connectivity kit is used to put the drive in mode b before you flash the firmware. If Windows cannot see the drive, then you cant flash the firmware. You dont really need it but it makes the mode b thing much easier apparently. Once its done you may never use it again. The drive must obviously be flashed before the downloaded pre-patched backups will work.

Exactly, they already have certain updates come with games as it updated my xbox when I ran GRAW for the first time.

hmm but I thought you only need it for windows, so why not just flash it in DOS then?

You need it in mode B for it to be usable.. It can easily be done with a linux boot cd (slax that has been pre-prepared for the job).

ah ok so I need it in modeb before beeing able to flash any firmware at all. good to know, I always thought you only need it for it to work in windows so you can backup your games yourself.

thanks for clarifying that

But that doesn´t always work. I had to do the wire-method.

A friend of mine tried the slax boot cd and it didnt work for him either but he did it have success with the wire-method you mention.

Sorry, but you're getting ripped off badly. It doesn't cost 200 dollars for a dual layer burner. And you don't HAVE to get premium verbatims. I'm using a Pioneer 109 with riteks and they're just fine. With all these firmware updates in the last couple months, media recognition is much better anyway.
