XBMC is the best All round Media Player I have seen! Though it requires a Xbox Razz

Videolan (vlc) is indeed a very good allround.

Mediaplayer classic (more like quicktime alternative is quite good too)

Install a codec pack and use jetAudio.

Why do God hates codec packs? I didn't have any problems. I tried VLC, Media Classic, Winamp, and Core and I didn't like any of them. I installed Ace Codecs pack and now I can play any vid types in any players installed on my PC. Not all codec packs are evil.

You can't play mkv, rmvb, and mov natively in WMP or Winamp or other players, but codec pack allowed you to. Codec pack have a setting for custom, which allows you to choice what codec you want, and most people just installed everything which might causes conflict with certain program. I use custom mode and select the codec I want, and I have no conflict with other players. My PC plays all formats in any players. So I don't see why ppl hate codec pack because they have one bad experience with it.

Codec packs sucks. Just get FFDShow and you'll set for most vids.
