Joystiq has learned that the previously rumored remake of Halo: Combat Evolved will indeed launch this holiday season for Xbox 360 with a full visual overhaul. Sources explain that the re-release is not Bungie's 2001 Xbox game simply running at a higher resolution -- it's being remade with new art assets. While Halo's audio will likely remain unaltered, the controls will allow for more recent Halo configurations.
The Halo: Combat Evolved remake is allegedly being developed by New Jersey-based Saber Interactive, the company behind TimeShift and Namco's upcoming Inversion, but we've been unable to confirm the nature of the engine powering it. We understand that it's something other than the Reach engine.
The Halo: Combat Evolved update, one of two Halo games currently in development under the watchful eye of 343 Industries, is expected to support 1080p resolution and 3D televisions. Details on multiplayer are supposedly still being worked out, but we understand the remake will likely feature online co-op (the original game supported two-player split-screen co-op).
The game is expected to re-evolve on November 15, 2011, ten years after Halo: Combat Evolved launched alongside the Xbox. Our sources didn't know of any plans to similarly upgrade the recently disconnected Halo 2, but it's hard to imagine Microsoft playing favorites with its biggest franchise.
May the NFOrce be with you always.

The first Halo was kinda fun, but COME ON!
First they only have ridiculous Xbox1 support on the 360, then disable Xbox-Live. And then they can sell all the games again...

Sure, part of me thinks it will be cool to see a remake of this (possibly improved in some marginal ways), but overall, I'm with Aeternum on this one...waste of time, talent and funds, when they could instead be launching/making a new Halo game rather than a remake.
Give it a few years and we'll see a remake of Halo Reach : The Super HD New Hotness Version.
Hmmm played the first one on pc. Back then I was bomb at shooters and wasn't impressed by halo THAT much. Will pick this up. After I beat the 40 or so games I own that I haven't even scratched a surface of.

I love this quote on so many levels. Running 480p visuals at 1080p would looks somewhat horrific without new assets. It's almost as if the author was really struggling to fill his word quota for the day.
As for the game, it was the best console shooter but it was the best of a terrible bunch. Got me into console gaming I guess but no desire to play it again. Where's my Ico remake???

Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary, the high-definition remake of the landmark Halo: Combat Evolved, will feature new narrative content and on-the-fly switching between its new presentation and the graphic mode of the original.
The news, first revealed to the gaming press last month, was delivered publicly to a couple thousand Halo fans packing a panel on the game's universe, touching largely on its novelization but still offering teases and tidbits about the games.
Halo: Anniversary will incorporate information terminals, seen in later games in the series, to deepen the story of what is taking place in the remainder of the Halo continuity at the time of Combat Evolved. Informational only, they will not intrude on the gameplay or become new objectives. Some will be narrated by Guilty Spark, the artificial intelligence serving as the antagonist in Halo: Combat Evolved. As the settings shift between human and Forerunner environments, so will the narrators, said Frank O'Connor, Halo's franchise developer.
To great cheers, the panel gave a short demonstration of Halo: Anniversary's first level. [pictured above] O'Connor said the game will in essence be two sets of code running concurrently: The updated presentational code, and the enemy and squad AI from the original. "It's about reliving that experience of playing Halo 1 for the first time," he said.
Upon reaching a familiar point in the game, players might wonder how it had looked in the original, O'Connor said. For that reason, developers elevated "Classic Mode" from a pre-mission menu selection to an on-the-fly choice. Developers simply had too much fun switching between the two modes mid-level, he said, and they wanted to extend that experience to the users.
There was a slight lag as the visuals changed, something O'Connor said wouldn't be so pronounced in the final version, as an early build was being shown. As the monitor switched from high definition to low, clear blue water had a matte surfacing, and sunlight reflection off it became sea foam.
"This represents 10 years of gaming evolution," O'Connor said.
Responding to a fan's question, O'Connor added that the original Easter eggs of the game will reappear, though some may be updated. "Some reference girlfriends who are no longer girlfriends," he said. "We've updated those. That was awkward, going to back to a guy and asking if he was still in love with her."
Finally, "the Magnum is back," O'Connor said, as the badass sidearm reappeared on the screen, to great cheering. "You'll be able to take the Magnum, go back, and mow through the game," he added.

The question is, is this game worth a verbatim? I enjoyed halo 1 back when it was released, but i don't think a "new" engine can bring back the epicness when first playing it.

That's exactly why I'm not bothering...
Halo at the time was iconic, most things Halo have been pretty good ish but I don't want to destroy the memories of that game with cheap eye candy, if anything the ability to swap between graphics is little more than an ego trip for the developers.
from what i can see, it doesn't change resolution at the touch of a button, you have to go into the main menu options. there is supposed to e kinnect support for voice activation
this makes it not as easy to see the differences on the fly
