Satellite Internet services are used in locations where terrestrial Internet access is not available and in locations which move frequently. Internet access via satellite is available worldwide, including vessels at sea. There are three types of satellite Internet service:
* one-way multicast,
* one-way with terrestrial return, and
* two-way satellite access.

From what I understand a two way satellite is cost prohibitive. A one way satellite works by using the satellite for down stream data and using your phone line (56k) for upload. Therefore the ping rates suck but for constant stream downloads it's good.

I would love to have internet acess in the middle of the ocean |
Yeah, exactly.
If your in the middle of no where, I think satellite is a good alternative.
Im sure things will get faster and faster the more and more wireless internet develops.

Satellite internet is NOT slow.. well obviously you can buy slow packages, but as a technology its speedy.. 40Mb type fast (although a lot of packages are lower..).
Asynchronous (One-way) has a fast download but generally relies on 56k modem or GPRS (9k) for upload..
Synchronous (two-way) has both fast down and up, but is very expensive!

It sucks then lol
Thats why i stay away from sateliite shit. I still dont see how the sat companies say their services are better than cable/dsl services.
I rarely have a problem with my internet and my tv. And if I do, its not my problem, but the providers problem so a bunch of people are affected, not just me.
I hate that. When my power is out or the tv is fucked and my brother's is working (he doesnt live in Toronto, 20-30minutes away).
The worst was the east coast power outage of 2003...a day and a half in blistering summer heat with no electricity and shit...no ac, no tv, no cpu...i drank ALOT of beer that day and a half lol

Satellite does not fuck up in storm.
We got satellite TV here and it works in all weathers.
Dad got satellite Internet on the boat and it works in storms with 10-20m waves.
I hate you.

I'm basing my comments on a guy I used to know who had it, he would always get cut off during a storm.. It depends on the kind of storm of course..

But these kind of storms are very rare (once in 2-3 years) so it's okay |

Yes ofcourse.
Though only in high places like jerusalem and the north.
It's not snowing every year in Jerusalem but it is snowing every year and there is even a ski site on mount Hermon in the north.

The bottom line is -
If you are not a gamer, and need more bandwidth then dial-up and you are unable to get cable or DSL, sattelite is for you. If you are a gamer though, sattelite sucks since you can expect to see ping times of 3 seconds. If you are a gamer and want something better then dialup, and you cant get any high-speed internet solutions, then I would highly reccomend ISDN.

fucking disconnected left an right... speed is slightly higher than a 56k... but not by much... i had a deal of 100 dollars for unlimited transfer.. THEN they decided to BY THEMSELVES switch my plan to 50 dollars a month for 50 megs of transfer.... but i was using the net for 16 hours a day and i would go through 50 megs a day atleast... so in the end of the month i got a nice fat 1800 dollar sat internet bill.
