UK's Gaming hardware company In2Games wins award at German Gaming Trade-show with its innovative new 3D input device for the Playstation 2.
The GameTrak is an interesting atempt on capturing human motion for 3D interactions in virtual environments such as games. Gamers have to wear gloves that are connected via strings to a base unit that stands on the floor. The unit captures the amount of string pulled out and the angle to determine the 3D location of the users hands - pretty cool idea. The GameTrak comes with special games that support the 3D controller. Upcoming titles include Dark Wind and Real World Golf. It is best to watch a video to understand how the GameTrak works.
Effective 3D interaction is still the biggest issue to solve for virtual reality applications. Most gamers still prefere the keyboard and mouse combination.
The GameTrak will be distributed in Germany, Austria and Switzerland by Atari. No word yet on availability of the GameTrak in the US.
