Lindows is messed up, blocked, stupid etc. Don't get it. Mandrake and Suse are much better. Fedora core 2 could be another choice but It's pretty buggy right now. When you adapt you could get into Gentoo which is a wonderful distro.

Don't fuck about with these useless distros which hide everything you need to know.

Try gentoo - once you've finished the install you'll have a decent grasp of how a linux system works and how to use it if you're pretty computer savvy.

Nothing better than typing "emerge app" pressing enter and watching the app download and install itself. It's easier than windows ffs.

First you're telling him to get Gentoo too learn how a linux system works, and then just use the 'emerge' function, instead of the manual config/compile stuff, which teaches you a lot more.

Anyway.. SUSE is the distro (imo) to go for..

Gentoo doesn't hide anything you need to know and teaches you how a linux system works but it also makes it easy to administer a linux system.

If you're not really familiar with linux, Gentoo is way too complex to install. It's 1 of the distro's that hardest to install, even.

Instead, try Libranet. It's Debian with a n00b friendly installer:

That site is also a great source to read about the pro's and con's of different distro's, worth checking out. Smile

I would say Mandrake, the only distro that installed on my laptop without any problems, fedora 2 is also good for newbies, they have the simplest almost windows like installation which will not intimidate the new user. Gentoo is a great OS to have but if you are a newbie to linux, never go for gentoo, first its painstakingly time consuming and second, if you dont know what you are doing, you can have a pretty messy installation, play around with mandrake and fedora till you get a grasp anfd then move to gentoo
