Ok lads xmas is coming as we all know Sad

Now, my 7 year old son wants a handheld for xmas, this is a good pressie for him. cos as anyone with kids knows, they play with something for 5 mins then its chucked to the back of the cupboard never to see the light of day again...

i need advice though - cos ive never owned a handheld thingy and never wanted to..
he already has a gameboy at his mums house.. so not geting him one of those..
heres the questions i need answers to.... if you would be so kind Smile

also i already own a ps2/xbox so dont need/want those and dont want a 360 yet!

FIRST OF ALL! if any of my questions unintentionally break the rules. im sorry.. it was not intentional in any way.. im just asking for advice.. not where to d/l stuff etc..

1.price! whats the cheapest but at the same time not crappy handheld console?

2.suitable games - hes 7 so i need one that has most of the sort of crap 7 yr olds like..mario type nonsense etc.

Now to the important questions!

3. the ease at which the console in question can be chipped/hacked or bypassed to avoid copy protection.. IE: which is the easiest/cheapest to get done/do myself?

4.the ease of use once the thing is chipped - by this i mean can a game just be put in the drive/cart slot and played (by a 7 yr old with no dad intervention?)

5.the availiability of games to d/l ? ie: are some consoles difficult to grab stuff for, for one reason or another?

6.if chippin etc is not an option the one with cheapish games to buy.. not £40-50 .. thats too much ..

So basically im asking the cheapest/easiest way to get him his pressie and at the same time save me a few quid.. thanks for any advice.

of course i realise i may have to buy him a more expensive console - but perhaps save cash on the games.. therefore outweighing the need to buy a cheaper model..

Get a Nintendo DS.
In Europe, its 130€ + 100€ for the stuff required to play backups, and there are many fun games suitable for your son.

DS for sure, although you'll need to purchase external equipment to "crack" it's protection. Once you have it's as simple as finding your ROMs and moving the files over.

The game selection for DS is much stronger and more suited to your situation I'd say, the game are just simply too good for words, the way you can interact with the game via touch is unlike any other thing.

PSP on the other hand, has a few good games, but mostly re-hashes and re-makes. However, to "crack" it you don't need to buy anything. You just download the hacks to the included memory stick and you're good to go. You can load any game to date without problems.

Further with the ease of use with a PSP you won't even need to buy a huge memstick as you can load any image from your computer via USB. Sure you can't move around anymore, but it's a trade off like any other. Wink

1. Nintendo DS

2. Nintendo DS

3. hhhmmm, never owned a DS so dont know what modding them is like. PSP is probably easiest for hacking as you dont need to do anything to it realy, just downgrade it to firmware 1.5 that you could easilly do and then your away playing backups via Devhook.

4. Havent tried DS but on the PSP Once all setup should be easy. PSP just has a game menu, you select Devhook and Devhook loads up. You then select the ISO you want to load up.

5. Not into the DS stuff but I would say Every PSP game is on the net. Some PSP Games are getting released 3+ days before the official release date. Only takes a few mins to copy a PSP Game so usually they are on the net within 30 mins of the release Razz

6. Probably DS has cheapest games.

Overall if he is only 7 I would highly recommend the Nintendo DS.. PSP is aimed more at ages 16+. At the age of 7 your usually dropping / knocking thigs around so a DS is most likely to survive the abuse that kids give things compaired to the PSP where one drop can damage the LCD etc.

Ok lads many thanks - looks like it will be a DS then. 2 more questions though Smile

1/is there any difference between the DS and ds lite? where playing backups or just quality is concerend? or anything else i should know?

2/what is the best way to enable the playing of backups? if possible and if its allowed could someone post a link to the gear i need? preferably in the U.K if possible.

thanks for your help - i just dont wanna get ripped off and but something i dont need. only want the gear to enable backups to be played easily and with little fuss

It's not a bad deal, but you may want to get the Lite version instead, although no actual difference in funtionality, the lite has better brighter (and adjustable) screens and a more powerfull battery, therefore with a level 2 light setting (apparently level 2 is slightly brighter than the old style DS brightness) you will get more playing hours before a recharge is needed.

For a flashcart in the UK I can reccomend this store (prices include delivery), ..... http://www.supercardstore.com/ Chris the owner only sells Supercards, which are very good for DS roms and homebrew but has flaky GBA rom support 80-90%. For a flashcart that does GBA roms well too you would need an M3, which with UK prices can work out very expensive.

Items you will need...
1) A Flashcart... Supercard and M3 are the most well known and supported
2) A passkey/passcard.. basically this is the hack, enables DS roms to be played/run via the GBA slot. (note there are new devices (DS cart based) now appearing which do not need this, but are literally just launching or launching in the next few weeks.
3) For Supercard or M3 you will need a memory card too, this can be any size you wish, though a good standard size would be @1GB, enougth for 20-30 DS roms.

A good site to find info on flashcarts is http://gbatemp.net

I looked up "gormless" in the dictionary, it said "without gorm" .... so i looked up "gorm" but it wasn't there ????

Apparently the Lite version has a better screen but becuase its smaller, its more difficult to use (Buttons close together etc). But I guess seen as he is only 7 he will have small fingers / hands so shouldnt be a problem..

As mentioned earlier supercardstore.com has everything you need.
http://216.119.88.100/s/scardgb/buynow/buy1gUK.php

If you're getting a DS lite, You will need a supercard lite, a superkey, and a micro-SD card (and a card reader to connect to PC)
the new rumble supercards are cheaper but they can't play GBA. So if you want GBA support don't get one of them.

And buythe DS lite from Argos or somewhere where you can buy extended insurance cover, as DSlites are a little prone to hinge cracking and screen defects. think mine was only about £16 for 3 years.

Got all the gear i needed from the supercardstore. and as mentioned the guy who runs it (Chris) is very helpful - he answered all my daft questions Laughing

Have to say the stuff was a bit expensive - or so i reckon.. but cheaper than 30 quid a game Razz

ended up with a DS not lite as it was cheaper and seems more robust

Thanks again for all the great advice, and i can def reccommend supercard for great service. plus competent helpful advice.

btw this refers to both the nds and gameboy - saves wont reload on either

Sounds like somethings wrong with it, with ds games it should save straight to the save file created by the client ( ds rom and save file should be paired in the same directory) the saving procedure for DS roms should be completely invisible to you meaning it should work and save by itself with no intervention, just like a real ds cart. With gba games however you do have to use a button combo (L+R+Select+A) to backup the sram content to the memory card (during game).

btw.. what model did you get miniSD ?
