1. Go to the folder Windows - Media and see if the .wav files are actually there. They might have just been deleted 'accidentally'.Razz
2. Check if some application has 'hijacked' the .wav format. Programs love to install themselves as the default player for all media files. That might be stopping the sound from playing though I could be wrong on this one.

I had a similar problem with flash movies not playing any audio. A reboot later everything was back to normal.

Make sure your sound scheme in :

Control Panel >
>Sounds and audio devices>
> Sounds
Has a sound scheme with all of the sounds selected Save a scheme or default sound scheme. All the sound icons for each sound when you click on them should have a selected .wav file available. Like the person up there said, make sure your sound files are in the same place that windows checks for its default sounds.

Make sure you have the right audio device selected in:
Control Panel >
>Sounds and audio devices>
> Audio
>Sound playback

Make sure you have the right boxes unchecked and no mutes in:
My computer>
>Control Panel >
>Sounds and audio devices>
> Volume>
> Advanced

Finally, RIGHT CLICK on My Computer
Select
Properties>
>Hardware>
>Device Manager>
Sound Video and game controllers>
For each sound device. Make sure you have selected the correct default sound device, right click for Properties and (troubleshoot device status) for the device. In this section you can see if any device is not connected or if you have one overriding the others or if you need drivers. There is always windows help in your computer which should be very clear how to troubleshoot.

If you have your device selected you need to make sure it is the right one.
