Alrighty! I'm in a hurry so I can't look this up now, but does anyone know what a good version (preferably free) of linux or unix would be for someone looking into taking a few IT/Networking courses? I'm going to be installing it on my home computer and haven't used linux in over 5 years... Thanks for any help!

I would recommend whatever version they are using in the IT/Networking courses you are taking. Saves you some trouble.

Ubuntu + Automatix is very easy setup. Even for a total idiot like me.

64bit version is alot shittier to get running properly..

I tried to use Ubuntu last night. 6.06... Apparently if you have USB 2 devices plugged in, it won't start up (install or OS by itself). Seems like a rather large fking error to me. Worse than anything I've ever experienced with Windows *cough cough*....

Gentoo ftw, been using it for 4 years never failed me, if it did it was my own fault. But i'm still runnin on the same installation I did in 2003 and that was only a reinstall because I moved to a newer and better filesystem than what I had been using.
Reiser4, ingosched and cfq plus an operating system you customized to your own hardware and it practically can't get any faster (and stable) if you know what you're doing Smile

Using Debian Smile

Anyone here using Debian w/ an ATI card, and if so, how did you install the driver for it? 800x600 doesn't cut it.

I would recommend slackware. I tried many other distros, I just keep returning to slackware. Version 11 released a week ago...

I have been working with SLES for a while now and so far i really like it. Updating is easier as with Redhats Enterprise Server, although i miss the good old cluster patches from Solaris Wink

Gentoo is also good
