I have 3 hd's: Seagate SATA 300gb, Hitachi SATA 150gb, and WD Raptor 70gb. I try to install vista on the WD, I formated it, then it says "Windows is unable to find a system volume that meets its criteria for installation." I had the same problem when installing XP, but if I unplugged the Seagate, then I could install with no problems. I tried the same thing with Vista but no luck. Anyone have any clue what could be the problem?

Having this same problem - If I try to install from XP by just autorunning the CD, it gets to about 40% of the install and errors.

Confusing.

Exact same problem, gets to like 45% then just stops and says it may be missing files or corrupt

I had the same problem.

Have three hds, one raptor and two others I use for storage and such.

I unplugged the two hds and only used the raptor, then it worked.

Also, I burned vista on a dvd.

Ya that's probably it then, I've got four HDD's in my machine. I'm not going to be bothering unplugging drives to get it to install though.

Ah well, least I know where the problem is.

I have it burned on dvd too, but if I unplug the other drives then it won't even start the setup process.

I just tried that, and I unplugged my other 2 drives and now it's installing. We'll see if there are any other problems.

Its a Sata2 disk. Maybe i should check an IDE drive but that would be weird

I had to unplug all my PATA disk and just run the SATA disk under installation, then it worked Smile (bill release..)

Solution for error 80070241

1 Step:

Create a folder on your "C:" drive. ex: C:\"VISTA"
(You must copy to a folder on "C:" drive because on the 2 Step your partitions won't be recognize. They will only be detected when you got into the installation itself)

Copy every file and folder from the iso or dvd to the folder "VISTA" or the one you created.

2 Step:

Boot your computer from the DVD of windows vista you burned.

When you get to the main window (install, etc) you must choose "Recovery System", then press "Next" and at last choose "Command Prompt".

3 Step:

Go to the "C:" drive and open Vista\sources and run the setup.exe file.

You can now continue the installation without the DVD on the drive.

If you wanna keep the xp (dual boot) just install vista on another partition

if you have bg version and cannot boot into vista (maybe your computer doesn't support dvd booting in bios), here's a way to get around that problem:

1. dl bg-to-msdn legit and patch bg iso (bg = billgates)
2. burn patched bg iso using dvddcrypter at 8x if on 16x dvd burner (slower is better for things like this)
3. use pm to create an ntfs on hd (pm = partition magic)
4. install winxp sp2 on new partition (sp2 = shut pole 2)
5. while logged on winxp sp2, install vista on new drive
6. after 1 hr, you got vista, baby! (hr = hell's rockin')
7. dcos! (dcos = decease one self)

Tried this but still no succes ... I'v downloaded now 3 or 4 version of windows vista and i applied on the Bill release the patch but still this doesnt work. It looks like my computer is not compatible for Windows Vista ... what would be really weird cause i only have top components. I try later on to install from different kind of drive and an ide harddisk instead of a sata 2 disk.

Found my problem..... and i HATE IT

Seems there is a compability issue with an Asus p5w dh deluxe motherboard with a 7950 videocard.
If you have this setup its impossible to get vista installed ... unless you have a second PCI-E card.

I got Vista installed with relative ease. No issues at all. 2 HDDs with about 4 primary partitions on each, triple boot into XP/Linux. But for the life of me I cannot install Mac OSX 10.4.8 on any of my drives, even if I create one partition and only have that connected. Seems like Mac OSX doesnt like my Seagate drives, or my Nforce4 ASUS mobo. Shame, I really wanted dual boot Vista/Mac OSX
